In-ear headphones

While those Sennheiser headphones are pretty good, they won't really block out the outside noise as well as you'd like. If it really is as bad as you're making out no normal headset will help you. You'll just hear muffled duff duff duff noises.

I thought you were just in an open plan area or had roommates and wanted to game in peace. But if you've got a concert next door I'd get creative with earphones plus noise cancelling earmuffs - stuff that construction people and boilermakers use, for example.

Headphones, even noise cancelling ones, just aren't designed to mute noises like that.

Agreed. Most noises will be gone, but very loud noises may penetrate.

Yeah no headphones will truly block out all external noise, at least not headphones in our immediate price range.

My Sennheiser blocks out all (environmental) sounds when my Windows audio settings are set to Max - mind you, this town is usually quiet, so it's not necessary.

Thanks, but now I am back to square 1.

What about in-ear headphones. Will they block the noise out better?

Yesterday (Sunday) they made this big noise for 6 hours. So maybe I should go for cheap in-ears. You guys could advise me what to do.

There's the problem.

In-ear monitors are not cheap at all. Earphones will be worse off at blocking out external noise. You could go into a hi-fi store and test some of their closed-back headphones there. Explain the situation to them and have them blast some music while you listen to something through the headphones.

Also, in-ear monitors do not block out any external noise. I use them when recording in studio or playing live shows and they muffle the sound like earplugs would, but do not block anything out.

-edit-

In-ear monitors and earphones are different things. Earphones are what you get with your phone. In-ear monitors are a mold casting of your ear much like a hearing aid.

Thanks - So it will still be the best to consider the Sennheisers? At least their will be a reduction in the overall noise which will enable me to play games for that noisy 6 hours.

If so the cheaper Sennheiser (nearly R300) makes more sense. After all it is for only 6 hours a week (hopefully).

It is not a concert, it is church and these people pull out all the stops. :D

Also remember that, even though the headphones won't block out all the sound completely, the actual game will muffle it out and you most likely won't notice it.

I play with open-back monitor headphones (very little external muting) and I hear very little around me (not always a good thing when I'm home alone). If you're not happy with the Sennheisers, you can always return them to the store.

Hope it all works out!

Was wondering why you were calling them monitors :)

My Sennheiser HD 202 headphones do a decent job of blocking out external noises/sounds. Back when I bought them - roughly half a year ago - they cost me a little over R400 -- from Takealot.

DuckKnuckle - The Sennheiser HD 202 seems to be cheaper and can also be considered I think.

You're the expert. What do you think. Sorry for milking your brains. :)

Protip

Take a pair of decent earbuds (preferably one that have a elongated ear piece)
Get a couple of pairs of ear plugs (it takes some getting used to to get right following the next steps).
Remove the plastic ear plugs from the earphones.
Cut the earplugs in half. (going to have to experiment a bit with length)
Punch a hole through them so the earpiece can fit through.

Enjoy noise cancelling earplugs.

I have a few stupid questions before I buy one of the Sennheisers you guys mentioned:

(1) Do the Sennheisers come with a volume control? If not, how do I change the volume when I am in a game (hopefully not ALT+TAB to the Sound Control Icon on the Taskbar).
(2) When I connect the headphone to my soundcard, will I 1st have to remove my 5.1 speaker connections, or will the headphone connection cancel out the speaker connections.

1) No volume control on the headphones

2) Not actually sure to be honest. Do your speakers have a power switch that you can turn off when you want to use your headphones?

DuckKnucle - Yes there is a power switch on the left speaker.

So I presume it should be turned off once I connect the headphone.

My only worry is whether the 1.4M cable of the headphone will be long enough to connect to my soundcard. I am referring to the Sennheiser HD419.

You would need to manually switch off your speakers when you want to use the headphones only. You can constantly leave your headphones connected and the sound will play through both until you switch the speakers off.

1.4M is quite a long cable. How far away is your PC from where you sit?

1.7M. Can always shift PC case closer. Turning it 45 decrees clockwise will be better.

Will only be for the period the people make such a big noise.

Sorry for stupid question, but how do I get an Image or Photo under my name? I see nothing under my profile in this regard. :)
