Chris Kemp rants about the future of gaming…
no not anymore, last time that happened i was so severly let down it was bad.
Also not anymore and I'm glad to COD FLOPS will be the last CoD game I ever buy. Boycotting MW3? Who cares. Not buying MW3? Hell no. I will not touch that game.
I agree with the writer's general point of view in regards to what gaming can become if people don't stop buying into the whole hype thing, but hopefully most gamers will stop supporting developers that make shit game, even if it's not their fault- it's their responsibility do do something about their situation.
I totally disagree with that. I think for most of them it's not just a job. Please watch the video on this website and then tell me this guy is not passionate about making games.Quote:

Quite simply, no.
Gothic was a prime example - I loved the series right up until Arcania but no amount of label-marketing would ever have convinced me to buy that shoddy excuse of a game. But then, I'm a connoisseur and not someone who takes whatever rubbish is proffered :p
A label will naturally pique my interest but that doesn't necessarily mean it will win me over.
Fallout 3 is another prime example of label-marketing--it had little-to-nothing to do with the original games, no mention of past events, of the NCR; the Brotherhood of Steel didn't hold a single philosophy original to the first games. It sold because it was Oblivion with guns; not because it was a formidable RPG.
Nope ... Modern Warfare was the last ... and I bought that only a few months after its initial release. With regards to MW2 - when I said I was boycotting and not buying the game, I actually MEANT that. And based on the comments flying around the web, I was going to be joined by hundreds if not thousands of fellow gamers. We were going to make our voices heard.
And much to my dismay, MW2 released - and most of the gamers who swore not to buy slobbered their way to the nearest store to paw their copy off the shelf. Willpower ... awesome stuff. When you have any. And because of that, we now have Black Ops, which those same gamers are now crying themselves to sleep about. They need to deal with it - they're the ones giving twerps like Kotick the power. If Activision started losing money, he wouldn't be staying in his position for very long.
Of course, my boycott of Activision products is mostly a protest based around the presence of Kotick. But my decision stands, until the day he leaves for good, Activision won't see a cent of my hard-earned dosh.
Now if you will excuse me, I'm off to search for more GW2 hype :p
I wont be buying another Call of Duty game, that's for sure. Black Ops was the last, the series has become stale and is stagnating.
I will admit that I do sometimes fall victim to the hype machine (Last game was Blops) but those days are over! I won't say that I'll never buy another CoD ever again, from now on the only CoD game I'll buy will be from Infinity Ward. That is until we have to start paying to play it online!
The last time I was really Hyped was back in 2002 when Duke Nukem For(N)ever had a release date for June of that year...
Then my whole life got shattered...
Infinity Ward is a mere shell of what it used to be - with a large bunch of their developers and designers having left, either for other companies, or to join the original leads at Respawn.
I have to question Activision's decision to go ahead with MW3 - if they lose the pending courtcase and the IP goes back to the original owners, Activision are going to be paying millions.
Not my fault. I canceled my preorder. *Angry stares at random people.*Quote:
The laughable “boycott” of Modern Warfare 2
I blame the console crowd. After all that crap Activision pulled (no lean, no console, no dedicated)...the console crowd shoots the sales for the game sky-high guaranteeing that Activision pull will stunts like that from that day onward....which they duly did...behold BO.Quote:
Modern Warfare 2 really showed publishers that they can pretty much do what they want
Edit: Funny how sales figures and the poll results don't correlate even remotely. So either this forum is full of wise people or people are bullshtting themselves.
Word up sistah! [email protected] Was the last proper CoD game. Too bad the servers died. :(
THQ and 2K are now the last 2 shining stars for me.
I dunno about lean (I've always been pretty indifferent about it, even on PC), but it's worth bearing in mind that a console and dedicated servers are completely irrelevant to console gamers.
It's also worth bearing in mind that, generally speaking, multiplatform titles sell faaaaaaaaaaar more on console than PC. Can you really blame devs and publishers for catering to their biggest market? :P
That may be the case but I don't think so... This is a chance for all the new/and remaining employees to make their mark on the series and it might actually rise from the ashes! I do secretly hope that Activision lose this court case because I don't want CoD in the hands of that wanker Kotick!

Activision Blizzard are one company :p Although I believe Blizzard has a controlling share ... no idea how the deal was set up. But paying Blizzard anything means I'm putting money in Kotick's pockets ... I find the idea repelling. So no Diablo III for me.
With regards to the current IW being able to push the franchise ... I'm not so sure. Any mass exodus from a studio, especially when it loses staff that was completely central to the development of a particular title tends to take a great deal of wind out of the sails. And at the moment, IW is being headed by people Kotick put in place, which means they're going to be dancing to whatever tune he chooses to sing.
My memory's a bit fuzzy, but I seem to remember a major studio losing a big bunch of staff in a similar fashion - and they just never amounted to anything after that. Anyone else remember?
It's not about one particular game being rushed or not. It's about the prinicipal of denying funds to those who ruin other games.
While nothing is set in stone, Blizzard is aiming to release D3 this year. There was an article about it last month. We will only know for sure when Blizzard actually sets a release date.
And I doubt that a console implementation will delay D3. The only platforms that Blizzard seems to focus on for simultaneous releases are PC and Mac. The PS1 version of D1 was released some time after the PC version.
Some good points in this discussion.. But the important part is to just not buy the games from developers that are making shit games. It's normal to get excited about their new IPs because everyone always "hopes" that the next would be better, but it almost never is.
Buying a game like Black Ops is like having a bad hangover the next day. You know that you are going to regret it the next day, but you still do it and sometimes you want to kick yourself in the head.
Just say "Hell no" to shit games and don't let the hype monster eat you alive. :D
As per a previous post Ive made ,
I hope all these massive companies die of cholesterol. (Godzilla joke)
I remember when I started playing games on my XT and later upgraded to a Pentium , back then , there were hundreds of little start up companies all starting genres , making memorable games and made us all spoiled for choice , new releases every month , releases for games youve never heard of , by companies you never heard of , and each and every one of them had one thing in common , they were small cheap games that kept us all entertained for hours and we still remember them to this day.
You would be hard pressed to see a release roster for a month containing more than 10 games ..
shows you how big the monsters have gotten and how bad it is for us , the consumers.
I dream of the day that small fresh indie games get released on a weekly basis by people from all around the world , perhaps via Steam , games that entertain us for hours and dont cost an arm and a leg ,
we will support them and they will make a living from making new fresh games untarnished by these large corporate giants damaging the industry for the rest of us.
Is it good for a programmer to program for a large in-house company like EA ?
Not really , ive seen many blogs of disgruntled ex employees who finish a game and get the boot ,
working in a small group and getting your money's worth , making a name for yourself and releasing new fresh content onto steam at reasonable prices will keep them in the green , keep us entertained and generally motivate other people to also start their own programming houses.
I hope this isnt a pipe-dream (pun intended , think oldschool games)
I enjoy seeing these big companies fail and seeing the little company's games get rewarded.
On this note , Kudo's to DesktopDungeon's , You are exactly what I am talking about !
I hope you motivate more people to start programming fun games.
