HSOD ? Do not recall reading about that as yet.
Well according to Animenewsnetwork: they only have 12 listed as well :(

Number of episodes: 12
I will NOT be happy if thats the case!
There's some debate going on around whether there is 12 or 13 episodes - but that seems to be what it comes down to.
However, the manga is still running, so maybe there is hope for a second season.
I'm sure there will be :)
Which sucks. They should just be ongoing until it ends. FMA 2 had it down perfectly!
Im also really enjoying Shiki so far. Ep 10 is out. I didn't expect it to go the way that it did and now I have to wait for next week to see what happens :(
The difference between FMA and FMA Brotherhood is the fact that Brotherhood started when the manga was near completion - thus giving the show's producers a proper storyline to follow.
They could make HSotD ongoing, but then we're going to run into a Naruto/Bleach/"every other show that starts while the manga is ongoing" where we have fillers that annoy the crap out of everybody.

It's a catch 22 situation. To have a great anime you have to have a great but finished base to start from.
There's are ways around this which I'm hoping that Eiichiro Oda (creator of One Piece) will utilize. One Piece is currently on a four week break. Basically the characters will be training, separately, for two years before continuing their voyage into the "New World". The manga will continue the story when they meet up again, but what I'm hoping to see is that the anime will actually show this training phase of the story. Showing what each individual character goes through.
Technically speaking this be classified as "fillers", but it could be (dare I say it).... good fillers. This will give the manga time to get ahead enough for the anime not to have too many fillers later on.
