That moment when you join an MMO as a result of an anime series"whistling:
It's pretty old (aired back in 2001/2002) but it had a similar theme - in .hack//SIGN's case, the game (called The World) was also a VR type MMO, and had resulted in the deaths of a few players, but rather than the entire player-base being trapped it focuses around a single player who is unable to log out. He/she (they don't make the gender clear until the end, so I won't spoil it) encounters some other players who try and investigate, both on and off-line to try and figure out what's going on.
It has a few similarities with SAO - Tsubasa (the main char), is very much a solo player and avoids other players, the VR world, and a thread of romance towards the end; but there were a few key differences - Tsubasa was trapped due to an in-game entity (AI), the series pacing is a lot slower and there is much less focus on action (almost none actually), Tsubasa suffers from some amnesia, and has no actual memory of what occured in the game before he/she awoke.
I was drawn to the series because of its setting, and also its music - which was composed by Kajiura Yuki; she is probably one of my all-time favourite composers (she also did sound-tracks for Noir, Tsubasa Chronicle, Mai-HiME and, surprise surprise ... Sword Art Online)
