HSOD ? Do not recall reading about that as yet.
Well according to Animenewsnetwork: they only have 12 listed as well :(

Number of episodes: 12
I will NOT be happy if thats the case!
There's some debate going on around whether there is 12 or 13 episodes - but that seems to be what it comes down to.
However, the manga is still running, so maybe there is hope for a second season.
I'm sure there will be :)
Which sucks. They should just be ongoing until it ends. FMA 2 had it down perfectly!
Im also really enjoying Shiki so far. Ep 10 is out. I didn't expect it to go the way that it did and now I have to wait for next week to see what happens :(
The difference between FMA and FMA Brotherhood is the fact that Brotherhood started when the manga was near completion - thus giving the show's producers a proper storyline to follow.
They could make HSotD ongoing, but then we're going to run into a Naruto/Bleach/"every other show that starts while the manga is ongoing" where we have fillers that annoy the crap out of everybody.
QFT
It's a catch 22 situation. To have a great anime you have to have a great but finished base to start from.
There's are ways around this which I'm hoping that Eiichiro Oda (creator of One Piece) will utilize. One Piece is currently on a four week break. Basically the characters will be training, separately, for two years before continuing their voyage into the "New World". The manga will continue the story when they meet up again, but what I'm hoping to see is that the anime will actually show this training phase of the story. Showing what each individual character goes through.
Technically speaking this be classified as "fillers", but it could be (dare I say it).... good fillers. This will give the manga time to get ahead enough for the anime not to have too many fillers later on.
That could be the situation, and you can only hope (I don't watch One Piece so I won't comment). My main problem with fillers, especially where it involves anime that try to follow the manga, is that they can't make to many assumptions, so as to not be completely off-kilter when it returns to the main story line.
Which means little, if any, character development, plots that often seem contrived - basically, it adds nothing to the story. And then later, any events that may have taken place (in the filler) that could have an effect on later story developments can be (and usually are) effectively ignored - leaving the viewers with a very odd sense of dislocation. And then when the story returns to the proper plots, a lot of things get completely reset.
Bleach happens to be a very good example - especially the Bount Arc. Taken on its own, it was actually pretty good - although Ichigo, having come off just kicking complete ass in Seireitei, is suddenly powerless in the face of enemies, which, when you get right down to it, are not that powerful.
Mind you, its not limited to the fillers, it happens periodically throughout the series. And its one of my main gripes with long-running series like this. Once again, I have no idea if this applies to One Piece.
More QFT.
This will apply to every anime where the manga is "ongoing" unfortunately. One Piece manages it better than others IMHO, but fillers are fillers at the end of the day. It's better than Naruto and Bleach (Bleach being the all time worst), but I think One Piece is very lucky in one respect.
Since the story, basically, is about pirates who are travelling from one island to the next it's very easy to splice in a couple of small island adventures in-between the main story arcs. It doesn't alter the flow much. What I haven't enjoyed is when the they try to extend certain parts of the manga.
One small arc in the manga pits the main characters against another pirate crew who challenge them to a series of.... well challenges. In the manga there was only 3...... whilst in the anime there was 6 or 7. They dragged it out waaaaay too much. Also in one of the best arcs of the manga, the Enies Lobby arc where the crew are hell bent trying to save one of their own, was also dragged out too much.
At the end of the day, unfortunately, fillers will be with us whether we like it or not. We'll just have to grit our teeth and push on through. I'm just sorry that the Bleach watchers have to sit through what they do.......
PS: You should absolutely start watching/reading One Piece. Best character development I've seen in a manga. With the exception of maybe Beck. But then Beck is my all time favourite manga....... and it's finished as well. :)
Beck is being made into a live action movie
I would love to ... but time is a huge issue nowadays - and long series can be a real time-sink if you come to them late.
I was put off by the style initially, although I think I've gotten to the point where I can largely ignore it if the story grips me enough. Another barrier I need to overcome now, is my tendency to shy away from longer series because they can swallow up so much time.
Bleach worked up to a point, and so did Naruto, because of the non-stop action element (meaning spreading fights out over multiple episodes a-la Dragonball style, but not as badly), but it doesn't work so well for other genres.
If you look at drama, I think the only series that gripped me from beginning to end for its full run was Full Moon wo Sagashite (52 episodes); NANA was good but it really started dragging at one point (44 episodes); Kaleido Star was great, but there was a bit of a lull in the second half (51 episodes).
It all comes down to presentation and pacing I suppose - I've come across some 26 episode series that are also way too long.
Yeah, getting into long series can be a pain. And One Piece isn't a lightweight either, 465 eps and going strong!
Might be a better idea to try and read the manga. I only recently (couple of months ago) started downloading the anime, man was that a mission. At least I'm up to date now with One Piece and Naruto. Next up is Bleach, then I can start getting single or double season series like Ergo Proxy.
watched another 2 Ep of Claymore... just can't get into it :(
look ergo proxy i would seriously suggest, it's a very decent piece of work.
/wonders where my ergo proxy is.
The latest chapter for bleach was awesome! :D Can't wait to see it animated! A bit sad though but still very cool.
*sigh*
I'm gonna do a post one day regarding the similarities between all these shounen-anime ... but I dread the research.
you read the manga didnt you? its epic! and the only move able to kill aizen
Spoilers people spoilers ;)
SPOILER(Highlight to read)
From what I understand to be able to attain the FGT Ichigo will lose all his shinigami powers. He essentially becomes Getsuga(I think). I think thats how Isshin lost his powers as well. I'm not so sure Ichigo would have been able to kill Aizen just in his normal Bankai form, which is why he had to up his game once again. I don't think Aizen will die easily/at all. I think he is still needed for the story to progress further.Either that or there is a new villain on the horizon
/SPOILER
I want to start a new anime but I don't know were to begin. I like gory dark anime and don't really want to watch bleach and that sort of thing.
Watched a episode of shiki. Not too bad. going to give it a chance and is that Higurashi no naku koro ni an good?
You could also give Dance in the Vampire Bund a try - I know what random screenshots and promo pics made it look like, but what it isn't. It ended up being pretty interesting by itself.
I am really enjoying shiki.
