Yeah, I gotta say I find it very weird.
Steam Achievements just don't have that same "zing" to them.
Been trying to figure out just why, since I read your post... so far all I can come up with:
NOTHIN.

I think because Steam achievements are a lot more hidden than Trophies and Gamerscore. It's not outright displayed to your friends, nor does it give you any type of ranking. It's just there to get and that's it.
While Trophies and Gamerscore almost adds an RPG element to your personal profile.
Alas it is a pity that there are no content to be unlocked to those brave souls who earn 100% achievements in games.
I mean seriously the developers can at least throw in a mini mission or even things to customize your character with.
Btw, to any xbox360 players are there any games that give you awards besides Left 4 Dead 2?! (awards like t-shirts for your avatar)
yeah half the time i cant even find them. I did come across an interesting screen a couple times which shows what percentage of users have completed each achievement. Never been able to find a list of friends achievements. I don't think its possible but could be wrong.

If only Steam did this natively and perhaps represent on your profile somewhere. Something more akin to how it's done on the consoles.
Here's mine for what it's worth. http://dev.zr40.nl/steam/player?id=jt2mu

I finished Final Fantasy 8 100% in grade 7. Took me 200 hours. The clock even reset. o:
