O woe me! I broke my Xbox 360. What do?

About a year ago I started getting those Open Tray errors when a disc is inserted. So I did some googling, found some easy methods to fix (restarting worked), and basically pwned that bitch. Usually took me like 5 minutes to fix it whenever it occurred (once a month, maybe).

Then the errors became more frequent, and about a month ago they happened every time I engaged on-mode and/or inserted a disc. The fixes stopped working so easily, and it started taking me anywhere between 5 and 60 minutes to get it going every single time.

Last night it stopped going, even after 3 hours of tricking it. I went to extremes. I vacuumed the disc tray. I pounded the shit out of it. I even performed a minor exorcism. It still gives me the ye olde Open Tray.

What do you think I should do? New Xbox 360? Repair? Laser replacement? Wtf will this cost me?

EDIT: I have tried breaking it open to have a look at the laser/rom myself but I can't get to it, because I don't have that special little tool.

If your warranty is void, just replace the DVD drive yourself. R300, 5 mins of screwdriver work and flash it with the appropriate firmware.

Where on earth did you get a new XBox 360 Drive for R300?

I got my laser replaced and 2 months later it started giving the same error. Luckily :P lightning struck and broke my xbox's network card (along with frying everything else on the network) so i sent in my xbox with everything else that got struck and I got a new xbox (and a new everything else)

If you can't afford a new one, stormy season is coming up. If you are insured, leave it plugged in, 24/7

It would just be a compatible DVD drive (http://www.360drives.com/howto , http://www.topmicrousa.com/newxb360todv.html), you can buy these locally for peanuts. Obviously it wouldn't have the fancy front cover, which is what you pay for with the original, but functionally identical.

Maybe get hold of PowerCare
If they don't want to work on it because you've tampered with it, you might need to get hold of someone like this dude
Or maybe Zaps can organise repairs

Buy a PS3. They drop it off tall buildings and it bounces.

Buy a new one. It's less of a hassle. Time is money, after all.

pounding is only usefull when directed at people / gaming foes. Try the DIY route 1st and then the replacement route
