I dated a girl who went mental for the Lego games. I seem to remember Zaps having a couple second-hand copies last time I was there.
Get a console.
Get a co-op game.
Win.
Bought my friend and his girlfriend Lego Star Wars for their new console. Seems to be working out just fine.
Desperate Housewives :D
Failing that plenty of other "games" to play with your wife.
My wife plays PopCap games, and WoW.
A few weeks ago, I started a slow and careful approach to see if she would get into FPS games. Borderlands seemed the best choice as she has mentioned on many occasions that she likes the graphics style. At first I just had her run around and pick up loot as I gun things down. Start small like that!
I find that my wife isn't comfortable just being thrown at it to "make it on her own". So we started with loot. Let it go a few minutes so that she just gets used to the controls. Start encouraging standstill shooting. A sniper character worked best for this. "Just imagine you're playing Zuma, sweety!" She got it. But be slow about it. Make sure to let her get the killing blows as much as possible. Just tank the baddies for her - but don't stop shooting yourself. She needs to NOT feel like you're "letting her succeed".
If she dies - make sure you die shortly after. This makes the death concept a whole lot more acceptable than just "Oh, I suck! I can't play as well as you do!".
Unfortunately, getting someone into an activity that they are naturally opposed to takes a lot of subtle psychology. Some females grew up with games and thus feel natural about it. If your specific SO grew up with makeup and barbies however, games are strange and alien... take it slow and play it mentally like you would teach a kid to ride a bike. Lots of positive reinforcement.
Stay calm. Laugh a lot. Force yourself to have fun!
I like The Sims, and some of my girl friends like it as well. I think that stems from the whole barbie obsession as a child.
I can try to give a few suggestions as to what I like and consider girl-friendly, and what some of my friends play.
Every person is different though, one of my girl friends likes horror games, like Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil. Another one likes Grand Theft Auto. Another friend loves adventure and puzzle games. And then there are those who ONLY play Sims and Solitaire. So that could be the case, don't get your hopes up just yet.
Sports games are also great, think tennis, Tony Hawk skateboarding, Soccer, Need for Speed etc.
And then ones I think are fun, but not everyone agrees, are point and click adventure games, or hidden object games. There's plenty of them and they are quite cheap.
