Quake!
Looking through these posts, I cannot believe no one has mentioned the granddaddy of them all (as a topic) - Quake 1!
I was always in to PC games, but only in 1997 when I started doing "Computer Science" at a school outside of my own (due to our computer lab being somewhat not great) was I introduced to the madness that was multiplayer Quake. Our really cool lecturer would let us play LAN games once the lesson was done on the shiny new PCs they had.
Having never used a mouse as a control scheme before, I played purely on the keyboard and was surprisingly good at it, winning matches against people who had been playing longer than I (and with the mouse!). Yes, I was a keyboard turner.
Then, I decided to use the mouse and thats when people would start swearing :) I eventually brought Quake over to our PC Lab (which had since then seen an upgrade) and spent hours after school fragging my friends (DM5 and DM6 ftw!). Then came all the custom maps to the game with all the mods.
Still one of my favourite games and pretty much unbeatable in terms of fun. Rocket jumps, trick grenade shots and a friggin nail gun. Thank you John Carmack for the memories :)

Quake!
Lol yes i remember playing Quake with my friends in my IT class at school. Have some great memories until the teacher found out hahaha it never really stopped us from playing it though :)

Oh hell yea, "Quake Break", is what we used to call it.EVERY break at school! That's where and how I met some of my best friends that I have today and it shaped the gamer that I am today.
Long live Quake.

Heh, 30 minute Big Break - couldn't get to the computer lab fast enough for some quick frags before Geography xD

I remember spending a night and morning downloading the >20MB beta off my ISP's FTP site. Then being frustrated slow the beta ran on my 486DX4-100Mhz compared to my mate's P75(Mhz). It was THE game at the lans until CS etc came out.

Quake... good times :')
Quake was one of the first games I ever played on PC back in 96/97. That time I think we still had to run games through dos.
Many many years later we played this religiously at campus in the computer labs with our fingers ever ready to press alt-tab in case an invigilator walked past. It was one of the only games which ran smoothly on the sub par campus pc's.

Yeah our computer lab was a mish mash of the 166MHz machines (teh awesum shinies to race to for epic game time) and 486s (oh noes teh lagz). Us adults learned our "boss key" for use in later life from Quake :)

Quake 1! Hah! Wow! Been a while (yeh, no shit:p). Back when I used nothing but a keyboard to play FPSs. Hmm.. Good mems.

Think those were the commands...
Having said that... I actually think my use of the mouse in FPSs started with this game.

Quake 1 was by far my favorite quake.
I just thought the game was so bloody creepy!
The creature design was awesome and I loved all the lovecraftian references
