I managed to solve my problem in case anyone was wondering... The GOG.com installer seems to be incompatible with DayZ Commander and SixUpdater install methods. I had to do a manual install, and most importantly I had to change information in the target of the beta launcher shortcut that is created in the main Arma 2 directory when you install the beta patch. Here is the procedure:
1. Install the Dayz files into your main Arma 2 folder. There should be an @DayZ folder created by the mod installer.
2. Install the beta patch (I used 96061). This will create a shortcut to "Launch AOE beta.exe" in the main Arma 2 folder.
3. Change the parameter in the Target line of the shortcut to: "{beta directory}" [email protected] -nosplash , where {beta directory} is the directory where the beta installed normally ...\Arma 2\Expansion\beta\___.exe (I cant remember the exe name now). Now, if you launch that shortcut, it will launch DayZ. YAY!
I will update this post later when I have more time. Apologies for the crude vagueness, but I did it from memory, two days after the fact.

Played this for the first time last night, and it's pretty much the most interesting game I've played in, like, forever. There's simply nothing else like it.
I love reloading a hatchet. Same way as I chop a makarov :p
Ah, the good old Makarov. People always told me what a crap gun it was, but no matter what, I stuck to it. It usually saved our lives when we got spotted in the middle of a town and they all had super loud side-arms.
Also, ammo was never a problem.
Oh, to change your name just head to Profiles (I think) in the main menu. You can edit the profile name and your character's appearance there. The game seems to use your PC's name by default.
