See the post I made above. Both are two frameworks that can be examined. Pools and Benchmarks. Worst. Movie. Title. Ever.
Orighty then!

I agree that it's a hard line to find balance on. I think the miffness does come when people that have had 1 post in 6 months enter a comp and win it compared to more active members but to turn it around and make it 100% activity based (read: post as much kak as you like to get points / popularity levels) is seen as draconian. My two cents on the reaction to the OP and past comps anyway.
I don't envy your juggling act ........
I prefer the 20 votes method, but perhaps it can be tweaked a little bit with some of the older competition formats. For example, this week it's 20 posts, next month it's 25, then 30 etc. For a person to rack up an extra 5 posts per week isn't that much, and the main contributors who already have thousands will be able to qualify for a very long time. You could also reintroduce the old method which said that in the last week you had to have made x posts. But don't make x too high, 5-10 should do it.
Actually, that is kind of what I was aiming at. However, can you pull a list of activity over a certain period of time? Because if you can do that, it'll make things a little easier - you can still set a relatively low barrier of entry and manage to filter out those who only pop in to enter and then disappear.
I don't think it's necessary to set a limit on the number of people in the pool, though, because that will just encourage a rat-race.
So what I'm saying is, you set the barrier at a certain number of points (say 20, for example) - anyone who gets past that level is entered, whether it be 20 or 30 or whatever (is it just me or am I using 20 a lot?), provided of course they actually entered the comp. Automatic entry is uneccessary, imo.
It'll basically be a carbon-copy of the system we used when we ran the Exclusive comps, where we expected a minimum of 10 posts a week. The spam was pretty bad at the beginning but it did slow down towards the end. Except, it should be easier with the points system because it won't involve manually counting user posts like I had to do for that.
All speculation on my part though - it hinges on whether you can filter activity by date ...
Unfortunately it's not that customisable. The only options are:
- A list of most active (X number of) users.
- First to reach Y points.
I've made another test contest to generate a list of 20 users to see how that works.
How about that, users ranked 1-10 get 10 entries, 10-15 get 7 and so on down to one entry. That way regulars who don't always post should also be ahead of the one hit wonders and regulars get a better chance for their contributions.
If you can track rep points then that can also be used
TL;DR...
Where's my copy of DMC???
Probably wont even make the top 100 unless it counts views, not posting when I don't need to for a competition.
When they had the post 10-20 times a week thing I didnt enter them so was happy when they had a lifetime post setting but really needs to be higher than 20 more like 100 - 500 Lifetime posts and a minimum 3 month join time.
Good luck to everybody hey new rules set to be followed, ;)
Welcome Buddy, you been around for long i see, i generally browse through and post less, mainly due to work.
Will trolling posts be seen as negative points? and how would you regard that?
The old way seemed a bit simple to manage i think, but who knows lets all give it a try and see how it goes.
All the best MyGaming :)
So congrats to the best spammer on the site :)
I'm actually a little just a little hyped to see who wins this today.
I never win anything, maybe i'm lucky this time round.
Thanks for participating in the competition everyone. I've learnt a lot about the system and its niggles, and the feedback has been helpful in revising how we'll approach competitions using this system in future. I will launch a big competition soon so stay tuned.
