Damn...anybody know which country's diplomats those are? Looks like something African...
Just in case anybody is wondering about the whole diplomatic immunity thing, allow me to enlighten my fellow forumites:
It prevents them being charged with crimes of any kind. Meaning that SA courts have no power over them. However the country which is *sending* the diplomat can
1) Charge them in their own courts
2) Renounce the diplomatic immunity - e.g. if they murder someone. Then its game over for the diplomat. No immunity & your home country abandoned you.
For lesser crimes, the diplomat is either recall (huge disgrace) or faces internal embassy disciplinary processes. For 1st world countries these internal processes have serious consequences, so generally their diplomats won't push things further than say breaking a few traffic laws (speeding). For African countries its a throw of the dice...there is a good chance of *nothing* happening to them.
The problem with this sort of kak is, you have no idea what happened before this ( Not that the physical intervention was required ) but i know some cyclists in my area are all about how everyone should respect them on the roads and they have this attitude surrounding them about it. Plus with today's media available to us, its easy to try make a huge thing about something small and post it on Youtube for that 5 mins of fame.
Do you know the whole story behind this z1oc, did the oke aggravate them in anyway?
im going to find out soon. it was here at the PTA close to TUKs. It happened on Sunday so this will still unfold
pro tip: next time at least capture the numberplates of the cars of these people ;-) .
If they have diplomatic Immunity, then we have diplomatic immunity to beat the shit outta them. I don't let those wankers even try think they can do what they like. If they try push me off the road I'll keep driving.
If all those members who are cyclists help us protect each other we will be able to fight back. Take a look at the video on our facebook page. https://www.facebook...s/102575386217/
Just think wahat would have happened to the cyclist if they managed to get him into the car.
On Wednesday, the 8th of May, while out on a training ride (bicycle) I was nearly hit by a Black Mercedes Bends on the corner of Roper (road leading out of University of Pretoria) an brooks, the vehicle drove down Roper street and didn’t attempt to slow down or stop at the stop street, and preceded to cut in front of me, traveling North on Roper with me having right of way. In my attempt to get the drivers attention by cycling next to the driver sides door/window repeatedly shouting and in a final attempt to get his attention, hitting down twice on his side wing mirror (which was completely un damaged), the vehicle deliberately tried to run me over by swerving into me right outside Pretoria Boys High and the 3 way stop street on the c/o Roper and Anderson, in a manner that also nearly caused a traffic accident as the vehicle nearly collided with another vehicle travelling south on Roper. It then became evident by registration of the car that it is a DIPLOMATIC vehicle. [key to note here is that a short while later the Driver 1. Admitted that he saw me at the previous intersection and felt he didn’t have to stop and that I will have to take evasive action to counter act his driving decisions, 2. The driver also stated that the second incident of deliberately trying to run me down was by instruction of the Diplomat sitting in the car, he also told this to the police officer who was on scene, when the police officer asked him why he broke protocol by not driving to the embassy.]
After an exchange of words/ heated argument, where I told the driver after him asking me why I was throwing such a scene was that I wanted him to apologies as it is drivers like him that hit and seriously injure cyclists using our public roads (mostly captured on video) the driver of the car (who broke diplomatic protocol by instruction of the Diplomat in the car) threatened to brake my neck (this has been admitted by the driver to witness and there is a recording of him saying that he himself did say it) , along with this the driver tried to prove that he will act out his threat as in the process of stating it, he removed his jacket and tie in an attempt to intimidate me. He tried to tempt me to hit him by telling me to, but I refused as I knew everything was being taped, and that I have not done anything wrong and wanted to keep my side of the story clean.
I repeatedly tried to obtain the nationality of the diplomat;
1stly tried to ask the driver, and the diplomats B1 body guard who had by know gotten out of the passage side of the vehicle, but they refused, and I then proceeded to take photos of the vehicle, license plate, car license, the body guard and the driver (during this process the driver/body guard told me take photos, it will get you nowhere).
2ndly I attempted to ask the diplomat directly through the drivers open window where the diplomat himself directly threatened me and told me I was going to go to jail and that he will see to it, the driver then pulled up the window.
The situation went calm as we where waiting for the police to arrive, the driver/diplomat had called them. Minutes before the police arrived the diplomat turned down the window opposite to him, I used this opportunity to take a photo of him as no one wanted to tell me the nationality of the diplomat. The body guard saw this, and the driver the preceded to hit my phone out of my hand cracking the glass of the phone, and took the phone after the body guard openly assaulted me while I was screaming for help (captured on tape by n school boy who's details I have and will receive the video).
After practically being rescued by passers by and parents of student, the police (Diplomatic police) arrived, I told them what happened, that I wanted to press charges, and required their assistance. They where rude (the police) and arrogant, took down only my info, address, cell etc. and got into their car and everybody drove off as of nothing happened.
I then went to the Brooklyn police station to press charges and open a docket where they told me "they cannot open a case and that I have to go to some headquarters in troy street. As it involves diplomatic police and foreign diplomats”

Why didn't anybody come to his aid? Surely you don't stand around screaming for help while a person is being manhandled right in front of you? If they assaulted him first, he had every right to defend himself physically and others come to help him.
Although I must say the cyclist maybe pushed it a bit too far. Would be better to just leave it if you don't have the necessary backup.
Another thing to add, it's highly unlikely the police will do anything about this case. He can always pay a few thousand to the officer who handles the case to bury it.
I suspect things are a bit less clear cut if you're there & need to make that call for real. Chances are at least one of them is armed. Clearly they aren't saints. Still feel like intervening?
I'm not saying your wrong, I just suspect you and I would both think twice when faced with this IRL.
In what way? I don't see the cyclist doing much of anything tbh.
Well he did chase after the vehicle and then started harassing and assaulting their vehicle.
I know he was pissed but you don't chase after someone who cuts you off (if your using a bike, car, motorbike, skateboard, shoes etc), all that happens is your raising your own adrenaline and your victim is now getting increasingly scared/ angry and then when you finally get the confrontation your looking for things like this happen.
In no way am I approving of the diplomats actions and I believe that their assault was pushing the limits of their rights. However I feel this all could have been avoided if the cyclist just dusted himself off and said this sh!t happens to everyone so there is no point chasing the driver looking for a fight.
Unfortunately neither party is right here IMO.
A buddy of mine sent me that link, it isn't easy to really judge what was happening because it only shows mid way through all the drama. If it had been at the beginning of it then maybe I would have been able to feel more sympathy for the guy
