Bit disappointed with the new GTI Mk 7. It's just not that much more car than the previous Golf, and for R450k, I'm sure that there are a couple of other cars that will catch my eye first.
But it's still one of the best hot hatches out there.

I don't get it. I've had both the Golf 5 and 6 GTI and the Golf 7 GTI seems like a much better car to me. Also, the price is R368k for the manual and R382k for the DSG. Don't know where everyone is getting these R450k+ prices from.Quote:
At this stage the only direct competition the GTI has is the Ford Focus ST which comes in at around R10k cheaper. The Merc A250 starts at R400k and a bunch of stuff doesn't come standard that is standard in the GTI.
The Golf 6 GTI (manual) was R320k 3 years ago and and about 2 years ago, the standard price of the MK6 GTI was increased which resulted in my 1-year old car at that time, being worth more than what I bought it for.
Edit: Just found it. The price for the GTI 6 in January was R360k for the DSG, so it is basically a R22k price increase over the old version and R10k cheaper than the GTI 6 35 edition.
Me personally, I would rather take the Focus ST over the Golf, just prefer the look of the Focus or better yet the Ople Astra OPC, which you forgot to mention ^.

Regretfully my impression of the sort of person driving the GTI is reckless and irresponsible :( they always seem to be doing 20-30+ over the speed limit. I see one in my review mirror and I tend to ease off and let them go whizzing by :(
The ST is very good value for money. Not sure how good it will keep its value for resale, but you get a lot of car for the price. Pity it doesn't come in DSG. With the DSG and the GTI's power range, although it has less power, it is one of the few cars that can utilize most of its power very quickly.
The Astra isn't really in the same league as the GTI and ST3 (with regards to both price and power). It would rather compare to the Golf R , BMW 135, Merc A45 and even the Renault Megane Sport. Those cars don't interest me however since they are less balanced. They are much more expensive and heavy on fuel.
