Xbox - making life (slightly) difficult since 2005...

Just feeling like a little rant, haven't done this in a while!

So...I bought my Xbox 360 when it first came out, fresh from the production line...the first stock ever to arrive at London's Virgin Megastore in Tottenham Court Road. Had it going strong for a few years to come with the dvd tray occassionally getting stuck as time went by, and then bang, December last year it gives me the RROD. After lots of cursing and phonecalls and emails it came down to a point where there wasn't really anything I could do to make use of the warranty as I bought it in London and was now back in SA. So eventually I had it repaired and it worked again, albeit never running as smoothly as it used to before the RROD.

Since the repairs it's been running a bit on the rougher side and on those slightly warmer or odd days it would just freeze up every 2 min after switching it on. So I bought myself the Guitar Hero 5, thinking I'll jam a bit on Saturday and all "good excitement" turned bad as it kept freezing from the moment I get to the songlist screen. Tried on all my other games, same problem and at that point I know, this is not a game issue. Try running the game without the hard drive, still no luck. Not happy! You know the feeling, new game, just can't play it! I left it there and thought to retry on Sunday, managed to play 1 and a half songs and it all started again. Followed same procedure as previous day, and well, no luck! So at that point just had enough, went out to the shops and picked up a new Elite box.

Yay, so at that point I feel happy that I have a new console and some freeze-free gaming ahead, not to mention, an extra 100 gigs space even though I'm like over R3000 poorer. Alas! All this effort, only to realise that I now need to get hold of a transfer kit in order to actually get my data from the 20 gig hard drive to the new 120 gig hard drive! All my nice little downloaded content such as guitar hero track packs, COD maps, Halo maps, Burnout map & challenges etc. Stuff I actually spent points on!

Should've probably checked it out beforehand, but ugh...does xbox always have to have a specific peripheral for a specific task? It's Microsoft FFS! :mad:

...And today it dawns on me like the atom bomb over Hiroshima at the end of WWII, what good will this transfer kit do me anyway? All those download content I spent MS points on is probably copyright protected and not transferable anyway!

You've got two options here:

1. Borrow a memory unit from a friend (assuming you've know someone with one, anyway), and transfer your stuff bit by bit. It'll take a while, depending on how much you have stored on the old drive, but it beats downloading everything again.

2. Download everything again. You don't have to worry about copyrights and whatnot - content licences are attached to your profile. As long as your profile is present on the system, you'll be able to download and access content you've previously bought. I've done this more than once when visiting friends, and downloading stuff I'd bought so I could play it over there instead.

It's pretty crummy that you didn't get a transfer kit with your console, though. I got one with my 120 GB HDD. :/

Yeah, thought about having to use the memory unit option, but funny thing is, I don't actually know anyone with a memory unit. :(

What I didn't know is that the dlc is actually attached to your profile...so that's really good news! Thanks!

Yup, it's apparently only included when you purchase the hard drive. Saw on the Xbox website that you can actually request Microsoft to send you a free transfer kit, but guess what, you have to mail them in London first. :rolleyes:

Wouldn't mind sending your transfer kit my way would you? :p

Well, didn't hear it anywhere really, just thought that it probably may be copyright protected in some or other way to avoid one sharing it with all your friends or the world.

Tried the link, did not work, but sure I'll find it under support.

I'm going back to London in December, and will be back at the beginning of January. I'm happy to bring it back for you, if you can wait it out.

[EDIT] I've never had to use that content migration thing. When I've downloaded something to a new console, and started it, there's always a momentary pause as it just does this in the background. Obviously, you have to be connected to Live at the time for this to happen.

[ANOTHER EDIT] I saw 512 MB MUs at BT Games at Cavendish recently. They're pricey (R600 or so), but dead useful to have anyway. Well, I think so - I move my profile and saved games around a lot between friends' places. :P

Thanx! I have in the meantime sent the request to Microsoft for the free transfer kit, so if it comes here before or I get hold of one before then, then no need, otherwise if not (knowing that these things can take time) then it would be greatly appreciated.

Worst case scenario if I get impatient I might consider the memory unit, but right now (after just spending over R3000 for the elite) I don't see myself wanting to spend an additional R600 just yet.

Downloading content again, I am connnected to Live, so may well look into the option of doing that again if possible and just have all my saves worry about at a later stage I guess. At least I recovered my gamertag. ;)

That sucks buddy, but buying a new console is often the same as buying a new PC, you have to reinstall everything you had before and get a lot set up to match your previous settings. Something you'll just have to go through... Good luck.

I personally despise Xbox 360, as I have had the RROD last year myself. A nice whole 5 week wait for them to give me a new one. Though I'm stuck with it cos can't afford a PS3. Blah life be a cruel mistress.
