So cool! I'm jealous of your Buccaneer :P
I finally finished downloading the game on Uplay last night, and play about 20 minutes. I can't wait to sink my teeth in this weekend. It looks gorgeous on PC, but I might need to tweak of a few settings to get a smooth FPS.
How are we friending each other on Uplay for some deathmatch?
Done installing now, but stupid Uplay is downloading an update at 40kbps for some weird reason and I really don't feel like waiting 4 hours before I can play. I know you can skip updates on Uplay, but I want to play online so I can use Kenway's Fleet etc.
I updated my uPlay this morning. Wont be able to install and play until I get home from work anyway... :(
I think so yeah, if my update isn't done in about 20 minutes from now I'm just gonna start playing as well, really don't want to wait anymore.
Weird, Uplay just went offline for some reason and when I restarted the size of the update was suddenly smaller. It's still going really slow though.
Just started playing, between the update and work around the use it's been a slow start. Opinion coming later
Okay, my main gripe is that there is once again the 'game within a game' nonsense. Can we not just skip the whole Animus thing and just play the historical ancestor part? I'm really not interested in what happens outside the animus, just like I wasn't interested in the previous 5 games. It's silly fluff that I wish we had the option to skip entirely.
Other than that, it's an amazing game and possibly the best AC game to date. I spent about an hour just floating around, plundering every ship in site. You die often, though. The game is definitely a lot tougher than its predecessors.
Umm I played the first Assassin's Creed and no other ones past 20mins or so. Is it necessary to have played all the others before playing this one?
Thanks that's good news!!!
As far as I know, no you don't have to. I missed some of the games, but it seems that the Desmund story has been abandoned for a silent protagonist. And the pirate story should be standing on it's own. Or at least that's what I'm hoping for.
Ok so I cracked and got the PC version. Damn you all.
How big was that update?
The first time I went in it was about 650mb, but then Uplay went offline for some reason and when I restarted it showed the update as about 250mb. Not sure if it's Uplay being crazy or if it did actually download 400mb in the time I left it, but it does show that it's downloading at between 40 and 60kbps, which is really slow considering I have a 4mb line.
I did play SP without the patch for about an hour now and when I went back in to do the update it carried on from where I left it, so that's cool at least. It's still doing about 40kbps though, which is not cool, but I think my connection is a bit slow for some reason at the moment since I tested it now and it's not just Uplay that's slow.
Ok I'm loving this, best way to describe it one sentence is that it's like brotherhood but with pirates. Havana is dense and perfect for free running and I'm pinching myself with the graphics.
Ike-009 on uplay
Mine is wlad777.
I'm - skawtch - on uPlay
Wlad: I also experienced the slow Uplay downloads - I'm on Afrihost uncapped. You?
I had to watch the whole 23GB download come down at that speed. Took me two days...
I would see the speeds pick up just past midnight though, and my other Internet speeds were okay, if not a bit erratic. I'm putting it down to shaping and possibly exchange congestion in my area at peak times.
Mine was doing 140 kb/s when I left for work again.
I don't know my Uplay name. :P I think it's Murphzor.
My Uplay name is DieGrootHammer same as almost everywhere else on the dark sides of the internet...
According to most people on the internet, the game is horribly unoptimised on PC. It only uses two cores and a maximum of two threads even though they said in a interview before hand that it will make use of four to six cores. In the same interview, they promised 60FPS on a 670 with most settings turned up to the max. In reality, you'll get somewhat close to that, but it'll jump around a lot (anywhere from 40 to 60; doesn't really matter what graphics settings you use. High or low runs basically the same). Most of the people who have been able to run it at a constant 60FPS were the guys with Titans or 780's. I'll acknowledge that AC4 looks good, but it definitely shouldn't need a Titan to run it at full settings at 60FPS. The port is fine, but the optimising is definitely lacking.
I would've hoped that after AC3, which still has issues on a lot of systems, that they would've learnt their lesson. Now even though the PC version is the best looking version, and a decent port, it needs some optimisation patches. Ubisoft, seriously stop giving the job to Ubisoft Kiev, get the guys that did the Splinter Cell Blacklist, Rayman Legends or Far Cry 3 to do it. How can they be so inconsistent? It makes no sense
I'm really looking forward to playing it but when they say that they develop primary on PC, it has to be a lie. At the very least the bugs are kind of funny. The Flying Dutchman one is incredibly amusing.

EDIT: Now I know why: ‘Watch Dogs,’ ‘Assassin’s Creed’ publisher Ubisoft: PC performance not priority.
No wonder Watch_Dogs had such high system requirements. Just upgrade your graphics card guys. We all have high amounts of disposable income. This is pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. It's too bad that I've already purchased the game, otherwise I would've just waited and got it on sale. This attitude, urgh...it really makes me angry . “On PC, usually you don't really care about the performance because the idea is that if it's not (running) fast enough, you buy a bigger GPU. Once you get on console, you can't have this approach.”
I pre-ordered, and after installing all the discs it didn't ask or require a patch for single player. Just for the multilayer as stater earlier in the thread.
Performance has been good on my PC I must say. I am seeing some minor frame dropping every so often, especially looking at crowded areas, but nothing too grevious. While I'll admit that it's not a buttery smooth 60fps all the time, I am playing at ultra on a GTX660, which to me seems reasonable.
And my thought about the game now that I'm about 2 hours in...very awesome indeed...
NVidia has some new drivers out that fix the frame drops, you may want to get those if you haven't already. No patch for singleplayer is good news. Also, I added a very professional quote to my original post. It might interest you :p
Anyone here with an AMD/ATI card? I'm curious to see how it runs, considering AC3 had that massive problem with Boston and the lag that came with it.
Played 2 rounds of MP now, not too bad. I haven't really played much AC MP since Brotherhood, but it doesn't seem like much has changed.
Back to SP for now, it's gonna take a while to get where I was on PS3 with regards to ship upgrades etc.
I'll probably be working when all you guys are playing MP over the weekend, but I'll still add everybody for the Kenway's Fleet minigame.
Odd... my update was only 290 MB in the end.
Anyone got/getting a AC4BFMP.exe crash on MP?
