We compare the gaming performance of Windows 7 with Windows XP
Windows XP vs. Windows 7
Considering the difference between the gaming performance of the two operating systems is so minimal, Windows 7's sexiness alone should be reason enough for people to switch to it from XP :p
Any chance of an Nvidia benchmark?
I somehow believe that these performance gains/losses are more influenced by driver support than anything else. Would be interesting to see benchmarks 6 months down the line.
PS. 8GB DDR3 ram is overkill!
I love they way how ms managed to optimise the core of 7 ! it is one beautiful and blistering fast OS !
i'm seriously considering loading win 7 on my own pc. currently running vista ultimate with no issues what so ever. got win 7 enterprise just laying here staring at me. but i wonder...
Install it already haha!If you have no issues with Vista then it'll be fine man. This is seriously one freaking awsome O.S.
will do that once i got my new sata drive :)
finally replacing my aging 120gb ide i use exclusively for windows and drivers
It is Great , no doubt I just put 7 trough its paces on my machine and I have to say it works great , NFS shift on XP had frame rate issues none on 7 , both on the same machine just Diff partitions .
Go for it , im busy transferring to it as we speak.
muahaha! organized a copy of 7 ultimate! can't wait
naaa ill stick with my windows 98 :D
What can windows 7 do that XP can't, aside from DX 10/11?
Honest question.
it runs faster than XP in every instance i've seen it in action so far.
All applications and searches and what not seem to be 1000 times faster on Win7 than XP on my machine!
What can XP do that 98 can't? Honest question.
The gap between XP/Win 7 is a big one, but that gap isn't made up of what it can and can't do. If you went by that mentality you'd be stuck in 95. The most notable benefits are drastic performance optimizations and perfect support for 64bit (64bit is right around the corner from becoming staple). Windows 7 is to XP, what XP was to 98.
Before you know it, Microsoft is going to drop support for XP, they are not obligated to support it forever, much like what happened with 95/98. Then the developers drop support for it, making running a lot of future software a gamble.
I have win7 ultimate and all my games run so smooth and the highest setting for all games. I never really liked xp.
98 had really crummy support for faster processers. XP also used the NT kernel which meant major stability improvements.
I'm a bit suspicious of claimed performance improvements, tbh. Usually, each new OS is more sluggish than its predecessor; Vista was a total nightmare in that regard.
Right now I'm happy with my XP 64bit OS.
Each to their own i suppose, but I can honestly say that Win7 x64 is vastly better than XP x64, no errors @ all, massive hardware support, super fast searching, the taskbar right-click features alone should nab you. . . If you've got any friends with Win7 x64 you should go check it out. I know it's a hard sell to certain people, but really Win7 is Microsofts best OS to date.
Yeah, using win7 64bit myself, and it's running like a dream. Had vista ultimate 64bit before, and I honestly feels this runs better. And it's much more supported than vista was on release.
Not forgetting FAT32 vs NTFS. That was bad.
Networking was better for domains on XP
I don't think 98 has 64bit support either.
98 was better than XP at launch in my opinion. But it was quickly taken over. I think the same for windows 7. Right now XP is better, but it'll quickly be taken over by 7.
nope 7s better now...... i have them both on on machine virtualy the same programs and games installed , boot time way better, networking way better, security way better ,resouse usage way less .
it see's more than 3 gigs of ram
programs like photoshop much more responsive
games .....
And I used to like XP from all the MS OS (Linux my main)
Hats off to 7
One tends to forget how quickly Windows 7 boots in comparison to other Windows OS's.
I have two Windows running Xp and 7. I found that Windows 7 works way better on my PC.
Reason why your windows XP doesnt see more than 3Gig is because it's 32bit.
Install the 32bit version of 7 and you'll be limited down to 3gig again.
boot time way better - boot time doesn't matter. Dont know where this "boot time matters" came about. I turn on PC, I go and make coffee, I come back and it's in.. 2 seconds faster to boot? Not like anyone ever notices.
And this is the problem with this all. If you look at the hardcore low level tests vista isnt that much better (3% on working out Pi to 25million digits). So unless you do something that takes a minute on XP, you're not going to really notice it. The reasons for the perceived increase in speed can be explained in another way. Such as now that you are running 64bit (can be faster). You may have more than 3GB, 7 installed games in a less partitioned manor etc etc.
What makes XP win over all these bonuses is that it's had years of support for 3rd party software. Win7 needs to catch that up. But hey, if all you need is photoshop, some Dx and throw in multimedia - then sure, Win7 is the way to go if you can afford it. Guess it's just the how you use it that makes ones opinion. EG. I'd never host a webserver on windows7 for production.
I recently upgraded my dad's pc to win 7 from XP and he's been running program that gave him endless issues in XP, now with win 7. no issues what so ever.
The only software issue I've had with Windows 7 is Diablo II not wanting to run. Apart from that it's been ace.
It may not be recommended to switch if you download all sorts of random applications, but the average user should experience no issues at all. I've been running Windows 7 since February and the thought of going back to XP is not one I like to entertain.
it's not that i don't like Vista. it's just win 7 will be so much faster :D
I remember interestingly enough when writing a CD using Nero on Windows 98 I received multiple buffer under-run errors. The green buffer bar in Nero above the progress jumped around like crazy (while hard disk activity light was permanently on) often causing writing to fail. Yes those were days before buffer under-run protection. :)
On the very same system unaltered switching to Windows XP no longer had any of these problems. Both occurrences on Windows 98SE and Windows XP was from clean install.
I have not taken any time to investigate why the above occurred but it did. Logic points you in a couple of directions but in the end a newer operating system I have found makes certain activities in general operate a slight bit smoother. Except Vista.
I am currently using Windows 7 on an Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz Single Core Prescott LGA-775 with 2GB DDR2 667 RAM and a GeForce GTS250. System due for retirement in about 3 months but till then loving the way Windows 7 is running. In contrast I couldn't live with Vista for more than 5 days. Attempted use in Vista Beta days, RC days and RTM/Post rtm.. never lasted more than 5 days. lol
RIP Vista.
I'm awaiting the Vista vs 7 comparison. Running Vista Ultimate x64, runs damn fine. I still failed to see why people don't like Vista..
Games run so crap on vista. Win 7 is great my games run so smooth. I had vista 64bit and running win 7 64 bit.
