Make sure you have a tertiary qualification (a 3 year national diploma as a minimum). Add-on qualifications can include stuff from Cisco (although they're losing their credibility) and maybe stuff for F5. Other qualifications could include stuff from Oracle or Linux.
Ideally, you want to go into Development. Technical / Support work in IT is BALLS. You'll never get anywhere financially if you stick with support - unless you can get into insane DB/Storage support. Fact.
