I know that recent AMD drivers apparently made some changes specifically for Elite. So if you don't have them yet...
But then there's always the issue with how stupid texture streaming works in the game. A couple of things come to mind:
1. The high resolution textures load while you are still far away from the planet.
1.1. While I can understand this, I cannot understand why it has to jump from low res to super high res. Where the median?
1.2. Why does high resolution textures have to load the same way on the dark side of a planet as it does on the light side? Most of the time you can't even see it's happening. But it is, and it's chomping away at memory and bandwidth like a true parasite.
2. Streaming seems to happen in a pattern the same way as the mesh is built up f
or a planet, which means that different sized textures load over each other constantly when you approach a surface... WHAT? WHY!
2.1. One of the older dev videos show how they are loading something like 7 different layer textures over each other, which breaks older graphics cards as well as anything below high end.
