PS3 backwards compatability

Does anyone know if the PS3 with backwards compatibility to ps2 games was ever sold in SA / Know where i might find one ?
According to sony's website ,
the last models made that had some compatibility , was made up to August 2007.
The only models currently in production are not backwards compatible .
Ive heard rumors that firmware might make the current PS3's play PS2 games,
but with some more reading I find the fine print debunking this:
If a PlayStation 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications.


Anyone know if the older models were ever sold here ?
I know i can fork out an extra 2K to buy a PS2 console aswell but i really really want a PS3 and I really want to play God of War (ive never played it before and i think it looks awesome). I also want to play Uncharted 1 & 2 (which are PS3 games).
So it looks like i cant have my cake and eat it too :o

god of war comes as remastered just for the ps3 which includes gow1 and gow2. no need to get a ps2 just for that.

the original first batch of ps3's was backwards compatible via software emulation afaik. however the ones now being sell are not.

I wasn't aware of that ! That is truly fantastic news :) Now if only i can get my hands on a good deal for a PS3 :) I shall wait for the competition to end first ;) *hint hint*

I have heard rumors that Sony has said that their next console will be forward-compatible.

Nope its was not software it was an actual chip on the mobo,

kerbyross those PS3s are every scares, my friends broke, (yellow light of death) not many people brought them because they where so expensive

My 60GB has BC but I don't use it at all. Tried a PS2 & PS1 game once & on a 46 inch TN it looks terrible.

Yeah unless the games are remakes (GOW Collection) it's not going to look pretty. It's like playing xbox 1 games on the xbox360.

ok here is the diff then. some was hardware whilst others had only software emu...

A gamer that spends his summer job's income on a brand new PS3, in Europe will surely be frustrated by the fact that he can't play a decent PS2 classic, especially if he doesn't own Sony's previous gen gaming device. Well, at least the problem's solved, for now and maybe we'll see it disappearing in a month or two, in case Sony's no too busy advertising its Slim PSP and new titles. If my memory is correct, things were way better in the case of the PS2-PSX backwards compatibility, so we can consider this a step back for Sony.
