The game takes place into a new world, Thedas, that's used as a backdrop for the Origins.
It's a very detailed world, as much for its history, as for the inhabitants' traditions.
The creator took their inspiration into the universe of Lord Of The Ring, and the (George RR Martin) books(I don't know the English name for those books so I just give the author name :P )
While it brings some original and mature twist:
-Elven being less arrogant
-Dwarfs acts like Byzantines
-Sorcerers live under the permanent threat of Templar
We got a classical and strong storyline that avoids cliches. The game specificity is that, depending on your origin, your gender, and your race, you will start at different places, the origins will also give you about 2 hours of unique quests before reaching the main story, epic, mature, and intense.
The hero will travel through the entire kingdom of Ferelden, he will get to meet dwarfs and elven, will visit millenarian dungeons, and his trip will be marked by battles, enigmas, and stressful wandering into the dreamworld.
Your hero will have to make different choices, political ones, friendship ones, and even romantic ones(by taking the right moves, or even making gifts, your will go up into your companions esteem...and maybe more).
About 8 brothers in arms, varied, and well made, will follow you, and they wont act like simple puppets, but will benefit from personal background, and personality, that will lead you into secondary quests, as long as you develop your friendship with them.
Thus, they all have their own objectives, and will react to your decisions, and actions, some aren't angels, mainly a berserk children killer, or a murderer trying to gain his redemption, and every cross into the story will bring you to make hard decisions, some of them wont have consequences...until hours later, and of course, there's no karma, or alignment, so you wont know what will be the impact of your choices on your companions.
For PCJEUX(the magazine), such a storyline has rarely been seen, get ready for short nights, an average 70hours of game play to finish the main story, if you take the time to explore as much as possible, with the temptation of trying a new origin, with a new group, and to make different choices.
Much more, the game is full of tactical encounter, where you will have to coordinate the actions of your companions(only 3 can follow you).
The fights will give you the occasion to use a vast range of spells and special hits, witchcraft is very powerful if you use it well, but the spells can also affect your companions, so be careful when aiming!
On the enemy side, monsters use their capacities quite well, so you better use the strategic pause to give orders.
The range of capacities is pretty important:
Warriors wielding 2 weapons, fire sorcerers, shift-changing druids...
Graphics are varied for the RPG type, and better than in the precedent products from BIOWARE, mainly against the bosses, even if it isn't visually original, but we aren't looking for badass graphics when it comes to RPGs.
Other little flaw is, if you are nitpicking, the special weapons or sets that aren't distinguishing enough from the normal ones.
To go from an area to the next, the loading are a bit long.
A lot of dialogues, that give rise to brief kinematics.
As for the characters, the design is engaging, the look is detailed, and the lips follow the conversations.
Mixing an old school gameplay, a thrilling rhythm, and an highlighted up to date story, this title reunite everything that was made by BIOWARE the past years, the intensity of a Baldur's Gate, mixed with the magnitude of a good series of books, all in the same game.
Little bonus: 1 - original, with the experience, you acquire new scrips to manage your companions' AI.
2 - Every character is defined by different characteristics, skills, and talents, and they improve with your levels.
3 - Your characters have secondary useful skills, such as lock-picking, set traps, or brew potions.
4 - 3 character classes are offered, as well as specializations to unlock. You will have to find old books, talk with some NPCs or finish some quests to unlock them.
5 - Dragons are rare...and very powerful.
6 - After a fight, your characters will be covered with blood, the realistic touch.
All those little details, and much more, will make it a big hit.
"PCJEUX" gave it a good 95pct.
