What sorcery is this Game Booster?

I installed Game Booster a while ago and the performance increase that comes with it is ridiculous... I just can't figure out why.
I've gone through all my services and made sure that only the absolutely necessary ones run and I turn off any programs I don't need before I game, but still, running game booster gives ridiculous performance boosts.
As an example, in Shadow of Mordor, without GameBooster running, I had to play on medium, and could still only get 30-50fps, I turned game booster on, and suddenly it ran at 70 fps on high.

I would really like to know where the performance suddenly appears from.

My specs, in case it's relevant:
GTX 660ti
i5-4690
8GB 1333Mhz Dual Channel Corsair Vengeance
ASRock Z97 Extreme 4

The gains come from tweaking the balance between quality & speed. The GFX settings you see in the game options aren't the only settings, there is stuff that can be tweaked outside of that...plus some of the game setting can simply be straight up overridden on a driver level regardless of what the game says.

So while the FPS increase you see is real, its not more FPS of the same thing.

Its a useful tool on slower PCs, but for high spec PCs I'd strongly recommend giving it a miss....mainly because of the services side...that stuff is a wild maze of cross-dependencies & scenario specific behaviour that even the good tweaking tools/guides is hit & miss. Last time gamebooster fck'd up something on my system I ended up re-installing...couldn't reverse the damage despite hours of trying.

I have to agree with Havoc here; Tinkering with certain feature will break your system to the point where only a reinstall will fix it. This goes for any automated tuning tool as far as I'm concerned unless it explicitly tells you what it changes and where/how it changes things and/or allows you to revert.

Do you know what sort of stuff it could be changing, graphics-wise? I can't really see a difference.
And what range of framerates should I expect on my PC, as far as I'm concerned it's underperforming
