I'll wait for Cpt Crunch to repost here. Either way, this is gonna be... interesting.
/stands back and waits for the fireworks show...
I'm inclined to disagree with you here - I mean, I don't pirate anything at all ever despite having the means to do so - but I think you're probably right. Just look at any disaster-stricken area, and the first thing everyone does is loot. It's a sad indictment of the human condition, isn't it? :/
I do agree that DRM doesn't work. It really only affects the legitimate customers, which is ultimately self-defeating. I do, however, think it's a shame that developers and publishers are now looking to include incentives to purchase - shouldn't doing the right thing and buying be enough? That's idealistic, of course, but again, a sad indictment of the human condition.Quote:
In the short term, the publishers STILL need to back down because they aren't even slowing down piracy. All they are doing is hurting their legit customers, I dare say they may even be giving a few of them incentive to go investigate this piracy thing. If they back down they may even win back the odd ex-legit customer. They should also focus more on giving big incentive to purchase the original copy (multiplayer, extra free content on registration etc.).
And tehNihilist: I kinda get what you're saying. To me, the ends of piracy - buying or not buying a game - are pretty much black and white. But it's not quite as simple as that in practice, ever. I mean, I'm sure loads of kids pirate simply because they want to play games and can't afford them, for example. Now, I think that if you can't afford something, you just can't have it. But like so many other things, that's easier said than done. So yes, it's a complex issue. I don't think there's ever a good reason to pirate something, but I think some reasons are better than others.
