This will be the fist Final Fantasy ill be playing... First JRPG also.
i was wondering if people are still excited about yet another Final Fantasy... i just started playing Star Ocean, and its so typically JRPG that it may have been named Final Fantasy. the last FF game i played was IX on the PS1 :) and i remembered it to be a lot better than it was when i played it on my PS3 the other day :P
I like a good JRPG. Problem is, it's not the most innovative of genre's, and since the days of FF7 breaking ground on PC, not much has changed. Mechanically, combat systems and the like may have improved, engines etc, but the storytelling itself remains horribly linear. Compared to something like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, the Japs are well behind the curve. But if you can put that behind you and let yourself enjoying being told a story more than actually living it, they can be a blast. I really enjoyed FF7. Star Ocean 3 and Tales of Vesperia, but have played far more and finished fewer still. Too many of them drag on, become dull and grindy, spend too much time on cutscenes and 'blather' (Xenosaga 2, Lost Oddyssey) or just feel... weird (Eternal Sonata, FFX).
I'll be reading a number of reviews for FF13 before I purchase. I'm in the market for a good JRPG again, but it needs to innovate.
Lets see...
Ive played...
1,2 NES (never finished it due to no saves but most prob gna play it via emu)
Missed 3
Played 4 on my DS (Still playing it)
Missed 5,6
Finished 7,8,9 (Finished 7 and 8 on both PC and PS1)
Finished 10, 10-2 on PS2
Suspended my 11 account due to it being toooooo massive
Last boss on 12 before had to give it back to my friend.
Lets just say im patiently waiting for payday for this and that im a JRPG nut :D
I also have to wait until the end of this month.
Personally I love JRPGs. <3
I agree they are cliched, but honestly pretty much every damn story based genre is - Originality is rare.
I just like the different pace and take on world feel compared to Western RPGs. JRPGs just feel more open, epic and adventurous, with their grand vistas and rolling green hills. Compared to Western RPGs which are often overly realistic and full of dark visual hues.
But I love them both for different reasons.
To bad I don't have a ps3 or xbox360. If only i had 1... hehe. Hugh fan of final fantasy franchise.
Final Fantasy XIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
After FF VII got me hooked I played 6,8,9,10,12...havent looked back since. Also may i recommned the old school "Chrono Trigger" If u love FF u will love chorno Trigger.
Also WHY DO PEOPLE BUY GAMES FROM LOOK N LISTEN?!!?! Their prices are always blatantly more expensive, but they just seem to get away with it...
