EA to rip us all off again...

EA has announced that it will, in the very near future, be releasing game "demos" which will be monetised - to the tune of 10 - 15 dollars.

EA claims that 3-4 hours of gameplay (a possibly exaggerated figure) has a very high perceived value, and they will use the feedback from consumers of these "demos" to tweak and make changes to the final release.

While this may sound like EA will be using these monetised game demos in a positive way, it seems like they're simply making us pay them to beta-test their games.

Also note that their is no indication that purchasing the "demo" will get you any kind of a discount on the final, full game. So expect to pay twice.

That is sad, every company tries to find a loophole and squeeze some moola out of it. No thanks for me, I'd rather base my purchases on reviews and videos on it than paying to beta test for them.

Never install demo's so this means jack to me.

This is silly. The only way that I will PAY for a demo is if i get that cash back if i decide to buy the full release....wait, even that is pushing it...

There is a simple way to boycott this, just don't pay for it. You don't have to actually pay for the product if you don't want to, you can wait till reviews come out and make an informed decision that way.

Never play demo's so this is irrelevant to me.

I agree this is bullshit, but the simple solution would be to just not pay for it?
If you get some kind of discount when the full version comes out that would ok, after the monkeys coming flying out that is.

Well obviously the "solution" is to simply not buy it. But I just thinks its pretty lame to try do something like this in the 1st place.

Paying for a demo is just madness. Mind you, many people will prob end up buying the demos of highly anticipated (read hyped) games. My guess is something like COD:MW2 would have sold many 10000s of demos, if thats a way to get to play the game 'before its released'. Its business. you don't have to buy the demo. I reckon South Africans with our limited bandwidth (coming to and end !!) wouldn't have downloaded modern demos anyway because of their size.

They don't get enough money? In this way the piracy will be even higher.

I think this will lower the popularity of a lot of games, cause demos = marketing scheme to make a game more popular, no demos = less exposure

so if demos are given a price tag, it will not only get less exposure, it might even make others not buy their demos anymore cause some people might not like how that specific game is played/layed out/...etc, as well as people rating the full game experience based on a half-made-game demo with very little features compared to all the graphical and in game features that the full game has.

Well this seems like a really silly idea. Not sure how many people will be willing to pay for a demoa, but there will be some out there. I simply won't pay though, and I think that most people will also refuse to pay for a demo.

It will be a truly lol worthy moment the first time that I see someone playing a pirate version of a demo.

Reviews > demo's anyway.

Who in their right mind would pay 10 dollars to play a demo then drop 60 more for the full game???

The issue is that if this takes off (thanks to an uninformed and gullible casual gamers) then other publishers will start doing it.. next things it the norm (just like what Mw2 did)
well now we going to have pirated demos and "try before you buy piracy" maybe won't be so frowned apon

i think the term "demo" is the wrong word to use... if they were to call it a prequel, then i might buy it for cheap.

a prequel will have the same gameplay as the eventual full game, but with different content. this way you also wont feel ripped off when you play the same level from the demo in the full game, meaning you paid for the same content twice.

so, make it 4 hours long, charge $10 or $15 for it, make it unique content that WONT appear in the full game, and i will seriously consider it. kind of what Sony has been doing with the Gran Turismo games :) how many people forked out to play the demo of GT5? sorry, the Prologue...
