This has always baffled me very much.
And having played CS from pre 1.6 and Dota since Ice Frog days... it saddens me. it spoils the game a bit for me personally. People start "playing" the game just for the skins
how does one get those skins? playing alot and being lucky or getting achievements? or are valve selling them?
IN conjunction to what you said

One thing to also remeber and I learn't the hard way.
Is that our Steam Wallets are limited - when selling.
So even if you want to sell a Rare Skin that is Worth R6000 (+- $375), South Africa is limited to R4500 (when I sold the item).
So needless to say I sold the item INSTANTLY, as it worked out cheaper for who ever bought it in Dollars.
The T's & C's are somewhere on steam, with regards to the percentage of your sale vs your wallet vs the currently, blah blah blah :p
I still remember this http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-for-USD38-000
Dude like it or not those skins are a big reason those games are as big as they are today

How $400 virtual knives saved Counter-Strike
It's so ridiculous to spend money on something that doesn't affect the gameplay at all.
I did it anyway. I've spent far too much real money on CS:GO weapon skins.
Although I do play my skinned weapons more, so I guess it affects gameplay.
Nice interesting article!
Just last night I was looking at some insanely priced dota 2 items.. Thinking of ways to make some dosh too.. :P
Most I think I spent on a cosmetic item was $1.99, and even that felt like a lot of money; cannot fathom spending R6,000+ ... After which, my account gets hacked.
That's called irony. :D
Not even if an assault rifle had a rare purple diamond-encrusted fleur-de-lis on a matte black paint finish would I ever spend that.
I actually sold those Counter Strike sticker pack things for about R50 last night, each. I couldn't believe that's how much someone is willing to pay for them.
In the past I've sold a rifle skin for about R300.
