Erm, I agree with you to an extent that the Wii graphics-wise is just a gamecube 1.5, but those "fancy gimmicks" you speak of was a brave and innovative move from Nintendo, as always. Sony and MS always play it safe banking solely on graphics, hell the playstation has the same damn controller since its inception. I'll agree with you that the Wii has a ton of shovelware along with all those crappy games as developers try to cash in on the Wii's success, but those aren't the only games for the system. The Wii has an excellent 1st party line up as well as some good third party games.
I agree with what Xerowing said, the hardware by itself doesn't a console great or bad, it's the games that decide whether a console is good or bad. Nintendo make excellent 1st party games, if not the best. Looking at this gen's console I'd say they're the most talented and creative for developing for such a challenging platform. I mean seriously, how long can the other companies keep improving graphics with the next gen? That just might be a dead-end, then they'll have to look to other means to make their games awesome. The ps2 had considerably better graphics over the ps1 and sold a huge amount, but the ps3 and xbox combined sales to date haven't reached the amount that the ps2 has sold in its lifetime, evidence already that graphics alone doesn't sell.
