AMD reveals two brand new CPU architectures
so far it looks like this will be a good measure wether i need to upgrade to AM3 :)
Is it even worth considering AMD as an upgrade option if you looking to replace mobo, cpu etc? From everything I've seen the boys in blue still whip the green men when you compare apples with apples.
intel is good for getting bleeding edge pocket chomping performance
amd is good for bang for buck
I have always been an AMD fan, and propably stay one! Like supporting the Sharks... Stick with them even in their dark days :)
And I agree with Tank, it is more worth the money compared to Intel.
Im still sitting with an OLD AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and its due time for upgrade / NEW Machine :)
I think the boys in blue cost to much for me, and have to agree that AMD has more value for money than there opposition. With the same money you use to buy a top of the range CPU on intel you can get the AMD CPU and Motherboard and most likely the ram aswell and may have enough changes for something else.
I just bought a am3 only mobo and now i do not regret it.
Im back at AMD after owning a Core2duo and im glad i have returned to see the upcoming AMD glory days.
Seriously? Upcoming glory days from AMD? I'm sorry folks but you have to understand that Intel is expensive for a reason: because they're the best. Bang for Buck is okay when you're on a tight budget, but NOT when you're looking for proper performance. It's like saying your Golf GTI is "bang for buck" compared to a BMW M5. The fact is, when you're parked next to each other at the lights that M5 is going to make you look silly.
I don't think AMD is a bad brand, I used to have quite a few of their CPU's. But you have to live in the NOW and realize that you cannot compare them to Intel because they are simply outclassed in that respect.
Oh freaking please!
When will my Phenom2 955 be a bottleneck for any current game at the moment!
The cheap cruddy GPU and my lack of RAM will for now. but at least i bought a new AM3 MOBO with DDR3,USB3 and of course SATA3 to ensure a longer lifespan.
I too live in the now, and when bulldozer arrives its just a CPU change away and when i feel my Phenom2 is such a major problem, that absolutely chokes my pc i will upgrade for a fraction of the cost.
Don't you have a socket change coming soon?
What would a BMW M5 engine do in a bus?
Whats the bottleneck?
Im not attacking you, it just ticks me off when the use of your 'superior' cpu will hardly ever be felt in gaming to a point where it cripples my gaming.
In my situation i jumped from Core2duo to Phenom2 because i couldn't afford an i7 cpu with the mobo and still buy a decent GPU.
After doing HOURS of research online i realised that i do not even need it for what i want to do.
Whats next?
Demand i look at the benchmarks and see the difference for myself?
I have, and made a wise decision.
I will never see the difference in performance if my money runs out after the CPU, MOBO and RAM.
Choose the CPU of your choice....
Buy a bargain bin GPU, or use your onboard GPU.
Compare that with freakin Athlon x4 and a midrange Graphics card and look and the impressive result.........
Not that great.
My friend bought the i7 and mobo and now has no money to buy a GPU beyond R1000 rand.
I like Intels i series range, but i will not throw that kind of cash at a CPU, when i can spend the difference on a better GPU and do some proper gaming.
The incredible horse power of i7 is wasted on somebody who doesn't need it for purposes beyond gaming, and is on a tight budget what with the cost of living....
The AMD CPU's are excellent and all the Benchmarks shown are useless if the applications of the intended CPU will not be used anyways.
This weekend i am gonna buy another AMD cpu[Athlon 635 x4],Just to run my multimedia pc[Shock horror!]:p
I agree dude. Seriously. Intel is great, but I will not, for the love of balls, buy a CPU for R13 000. I'm sorry but that's just overboard. I'm very, VERY happy with my new AM3 motherboard and my newly acquired 965 BE. The performance is great and while it's running games awesomely with my 5850, I wouldn't mind getting a better GPU, but that will come soon :D.
I'm so glad I moved to the AM3 platform. The Bulldozer is going to be awesome and I'm going to save thousands of rands which is a solid bargain :D.
LOL I like it when people take the time to type out a proper argument. It means there's some thought that went into it and that person is not busy at work lol.....but yeah, 100% valid statement :D
I hear you guys and yes, it is a valid point for now. And yes, I'm one of those not too busy people.
But a Intel i5 750 is gonna cost you approx R2000. Now you can probably get a very similar performance from and AMD for less than that I'm sure. My question is this though, and don't get your panties in a bunch, because I think it's a fair question, How often do you replace your AMD to keep up with the new games vs how often will I replace my Intel?
Another thing, don't say I only spent R3500 on my AMD rig and you had to spend R5000. Take your R3500 and see what you can get for an Intel rig and measure performance against the AMD. Probably find it's the same. So how is Intel more expensive then? Granted it's not the same level of system, but it's quite disturbing that a lower level Intel is on par with a high end AMD.
At the end of the day though, each to his own. I have no specific allegiance to Intel, AMD, ATI(ok, they're gone now), Nvidia or any other brand. I buy for what I can afford and what gives me the most bang for buck. It basically comes down to how much can you and how much do you want to spend?
i don't replace all that often really.
first amd was a 3500+ socket 939, then i replaced that about 2 years down the line with a dual core 4600+, then 4 years after that i did a complete overhaul to the am2+ platform and got myself the 6000+ dual core. now that cpu didn't last that long as the upgrade bug bit my hand off and i got myself the current cpu i'm using right now a Phenom 2 955 Black edition. and in all that time. 4 cpu's i only changed motherboard once.
the 6000+ lasted a year before i got the quad, as i upgraded in july 2008. the phenom 2 i bought in november of 2009
for me its was in 2000 i got my AMD thunderbird, upgraded in 2004/5 to AMD Athlon 3200+ 939, there after i changed to socket AM2+ and went for AMD triple core 8650 CPU, i would have kept that until end of this year but my friend wanted my system so i sold it to him last year i think and i did i full upgrade to my current system. I could have kept my old system and just bolted on the new processor but i got my money that tempted my upgrade... Fair enough i changed boards three times since 2000 but that is fairly little considering i didn't need to on my last upgrade.
I did look at the i7 now recently and i couldn't justify spending that much on the specs i choose for that machine, baring in mind i would have been flat broke for a while had a bought it. Yes the i7 is faster in alot of respects but i don't need that speed i don't need what i have now either but it was cheap when i did it and i liked what i bought. I am happy... guess that is all that matters in the end really
Nice read demon. LOL
I think I've landed up alternative between blue and green, over the years, through chance. I tend to upgrade between 18-24 months apart. Which option I buy, is just bang-for-buck-arithmetic, at the time. Lately, gpu has a greater impact on gaming, than cpu. Get any 2.6GHz or faster cpu, pair it with a midrange gpu, and now someone tell me, what you can't play. Mostly likely anything will run well on medium. And if you want it to look nicer, get a high end gpu. No one is going to run a server and play Crysis 2 at the same time. 4GHz quad-cored HT CPU is a waste of cash, better spent on biltong.
That's exactly the thing. Having a decent CPU is important, but at this point in time, gamers need good GPUs to be able to get the best out of their games. With no particular reference to AMD or Intel, a good CPU coupled with a top-range GPU is good enough at this stage and saving money by not buying unnecessary hardware is what I'm going for.
Thank you!
Thats exactly why i replied[AT 10:17pm] after working all day!
Dare i say AMD isn't very popular in SA?
I go to Incredible corruption, Computer Mania and Chaos and they do not even stock AMD.
One Noob asked me what AMD is?:D
They love to bad mouth the beleaguered brand and i wondered about the impact these salesmen actually have on the layman customer.
People tend to stay away from AMD because they are just generally told Intel is better[Bleeding edge is at huge price!]
That is why i have to set the record straight whenever i get the chance.
If everybody knew ALL the facts about their product, would they still purchase it?
Probably not, and negative views from salespeople actually drive prospective clients away.
I love AMD and understand what their product is about.
I know that when it comes to AMD, if you spend that little extra on a MOBO, you are set for a few years.
It wont be cutting edge after those years, but you will still be in the game.
In SA where poverty is high,
10 or 15% of people actually own a PC and perhaps only 5% or less have top end, current hardware.
That puts everybody including latest generation AMD users right at the top:p
And on that level i have no problem respecting everybody for their choice of CPU.;)
Cant wait for Bulldozer!
I'm not sure AMD really does offer so much better bang for buck than Intel. An i7 950 is now r2700 new at Prophecy - that'll chomp on a 1090t for a better price. And you can now get decent x58 boards for <r1500. You have to look at every price point to see whether it's worth going amd or intel. You can't just make generalized statements any more. i3 is a very compelling price/performance piece - excellent dual core performance.
Hmmm, looking good on the AMD front.
For now though, Intel just has the sheer ooompf enthusiasts like myself need to power SLI/Crossfire setups. As nice as the AMD chips are, they just simply cannot clock far enough, easily enough, to make it worthwhile buying one.
Lets hope Bulldozer changes that :)
cyrix cpu > * ;)
