Empire: Total War is easily one of the most annoying PC games I have ever played. Although grand in its ambition, its poor implementation ultimately makes for a buggy and badly optimized mess of a game.

Thanks for the review Tinman.
Quite dissapointing to find out about all the problems, as I was planning on getting it this Easter holidays, but now I'm having second thoughts.
I didn't have any of those issues.
The issues I experienced have been experienced by many. Just read the user reviews on Metacritic
Every single one gives it 6/10 or less because of technical issues.

This game so, far is a disaster at best. With specs that are questionable and a load of bugs that seem to plague all computers great and small. What happened to the days when you purchased a game and you didn't need to connect to the internet. As a long time fan of the total war series I have come to see the fall (or beginning stages of) a great game franchise. Next time take an extra 6 months to finish the product.

Still after 3 patches on a computer that has the latest windows updates with nothing that is not needed to play this game. Graphics and gameplay makes this a unique beautiful game. The bugs and this atrocity of a gaming client called Steam tears it down into decease ridden pool of decomposing dreams. Over half the battles I play in campaign crash the game in battle summary. Steam refuses to launch the game 1/4th of the time saying it's "unavailable". The AI is clueless at veryhard/veryhard both campaign and in battle. The fences in battles make me cry when units hit a corner. The sound clipping makes battles kind of confusing. Several shadow graphic bugs. Still I love the game and hope they manage to make it playable.

As per everyone else here, the game looks great, but its six months too early (Campaign AI & Bugs), DONT buy this game yet, wait for a sale in around six months and you will hopefully love every minute of it.

Agree with all below, will be a great game when finnished. Really needs the M2TW/ Kingdoms detail, towns are poor. Invaded Paris and it looked like a small hamlet - no history in the layout at all. Battles are always in green fields even when standing on a bridge on the campaign map!! Come on guys you are better than this look at the detail in Kingdoms for a lead.
Those are all from different individuals. There are more....Quote:
In the long term, multiple patches will be needed to make the game viable and replayable. The game is plagued with inordinate amounts of lag at times, frequent crashes to desktop, and full of bugs (as is usual with total war games). At the end of the day, a range of problems, some of which are major, dramatically hold back what would otherwise be a spectacular game.
I didn't deny that you and some others have issues. All I said was I didn't. It could be that the game plays better on certain hardware configurations.
I brought the collectors edition, and gave up with it after a week of bugs and crashes.
I will look at revisiting it in a few months, hopefully they will have patched it up properly
these things are normal for games nowadays. release now. fix later. what happend to QA, testing and optimization ?
ill get a copy when it matured a bit.
What I don't understand is how many reviewers lap this shit up, as if its acceptable?
I read the IGN review of Empire who gave it like 90 or something and went on about how amazing it is. I bought the game largely because of their review, and needless to say I was disappointed to discover that it is all but broken.
How is it that Metacritic gives this game an average score of 90, while the user reviews give it around 5/10?
Damn, that's pretty bloody disappointing... It looked brilliant.
I am glad I did not buy immediately. I could easily have been one of the statistics, but then I could also not have been (as per Stefan9). Anyway, not worth taking the risk though.
