Thats has always been the biggest issue with the Zerg, they don't have very much versatility in their units. They thing to remember about them is that even an Ultralisk isn't the tiniest bit more important than a Zergling in any possible army.
A pretty good build for the popular "7 Roach Rush" is this:
(for those who don't know, this is basically to show at what supply, or food count, you make each thing in the list, unless otherwise specified, always assume that to get from 9 supply to 13 supply for example, you're making drones)
9 overlord
13 spawning pool
13 gas
15 overlord
15 zergling
16 queen
roach warren when queen is 75% done
overlord when queen is done
inject larva
Use that 1 set of lings to kill/chase out his scout so he doesn't see you put down the Roach Warren. You don't want him to know what's coming. Then send the lings to his base to scout how his defenses are looking, if it looks like he's making an extremely solid defense, you may want to change your plans.
The larva and the warren should pop at the same time, and you should have enough gas and larva at this point to make 7 Roaches.
As soon as your roaches pop you send them straight to your opponent's base. While they're on the way there, throw down an expansion. You want to either win the game right there, or do enough damage to allow you to safely make workers while he rebuilds his army/economy/structures.
This is very true. Units in the Zerg army have very specific functions. There are many situations where Zerglings are better than Ultralisks (e.g. vs Marauders) while against Tanks, you'd much rather have the Ultras.
The Roach stands out a bit in its somewhat versatility, its can be a solid component for any Zerg army, in any matchup. You're never doing a bad thing by making Roaches, but you're going to need to mix them with other units in the later stages.
Excellent advice and thank you for the build, Subversion. I'm going to try it next time I practice Zerg, it looks terrifying. I think maybe around about the time you'd get to my base with those 7 roaches I'd have about 5 marines and a marauder out. I think I'm going to need to start walling off against Zerg... hmm...
Will have to test all this with the clock.
i am a fan of The Zerg Roach ,..
great game,..nice to play it,... chicago condo
Thanks a lot stab :)
It's quite a nice build because its a rush, but doesn't sacrifice a lot in terms of economy.
The added range means even against a walled terran, all your roaches can fire at once.
Best thing to do is just to focus down the depot making the wall asap, which will fall really fast to 7 roaches, and then just stream into his base and own :)
Cool article, makes me amped to play Starcraft when I get home :D
EDIT: After tonight, I'm shift+deleting this horrible game
Thanks Tinman, having to play Zerg in the iGame comp and I am a bit clueless when it comes to them lol.
