I wonder why iGame is renting servers from MWEB when their own clients won't be able to play on the servers? They're basically renting servers for the benefit of MWEB ADSL users. It's a weird move by iGame - it doesn't make sense at all. From what all the reports have been saying is that unless you're with MWEB or some I.S based account - you cannot play CoD: Black Ops in South Africa.
Even the statements from WebAfrica seem very vague. The one statement on MyGaming states that SAIX is not peered with MWEB at all, but WebAfrica, who mostly uses SAIX for their ADSL accounts, are saying that they are peered with MWEB? I'm sorry, but I'm trying my best to put 1 and 1 together here to get to the expected result of "2", but I keep getting 13.
Awesome. Thank you iGame!
I agree with the thought that MWEB have missed a golden opportunity here to push their agenda a little further using one of the biggest online games available.
It might be good in the sense that iGame will get a lot of complains from gamers about latency issues, and then they(iGame) put some pressure on MTN to peer with mweb
@Neo
I'm lost mate, how will iGame renting from mweb cause more members switching to mweb? Or do you perhaps mean in terms of peering/latency issues cause gamers to jump ship to mweb or their peering partners?
Also, if mweb were to host servers alone, how many would they host? It's not like mweb isn't paying gameservers.com for renting.

@ Neo
Soz than, I thought iGame was on MTN's infrastructure lol, which will not be peering with mweb
Anyway, I think you missed my point in that whoever iGame uses for hosting, that they can perhaps put pressure to peer with mweb since gamers will moan

Highest ping to igame: 25ms
Lowest ping to igame: 20ms
MWEB is rewarding iburst for peering with them...
EDIT: I'm on MWEB Uncapped 4 meg.
MWEB hasn't missed the opportunity at all, this is simply how Gamerservers works. Anyone can rent Black Ops servers, they will however be hosted at MWEB, so this still works in their favor as an extra ace in the peering war. I doubt the option was ever on the table for them to lock out anyone except themselves from actually running a server in SA.
AFAIK, MWEB doesn't have any publically announced plans to actually run any MWEB branded/moderated Black Ops servers. iGame is renting servers from them in much the same way you and I would, however iGame will moderate those servers as their own.
This is actually a model that works internationally because for the average Joe/clan, you don't have to set up and maintain a box at the datacentre yourself, you just click a few buttons on a pretty interface over the web and you have your own dedi. Gameservers (or another hosting provider) takes care of that for you and sets up all the necessary software. I'm actually interested to know if we will now be able to rent dedis for other games from Gameservers now that they have a local presence hosted at MWEB.
Let's dispel some rumors.
A) iBurst peers with a number of local ISP's, this is done via either Direct Paid for Peering or through JINX
B) Mweb Users currently coming onto our network are doing so over JINX
C) iGame is, and always has been a Public Service Provider, hence, when we were locked out of the Server Hosting System for BO, despite iGame being at the Forefront of Hosting in SA, we, I, didn't think twice about renting servers for the public to play on to ensure that our core community has an iGame server available at launch day.
As some of you may know I actively attempted to secure server hosting through Gameservers myself, requests which to this day have gone unanswered as I did not receive as much as a response from GS, this lockout of all the major playing ISP's in the game hosting environment makes little sense when one takes into account that the people with actual experience in running gaming environments have been blindsided into having to host on a network that they can provide no guarantee for and to use hardware that we have no control over.
Although there will be iGame BO servers, I cannot accept responsibility for their performance and we cannot carry over our support systems to those games other than our Administration and Management thereof. They are rented on a 3rd Party network using 3rd Party Hardware and our contract and SLA is covered by Gameservers.com, which means that the community will not be able to rely on iGame Technical staff to "Fix" / Maintain and sometimes resurrect through prayer alone a piece of the South African ISP Network that at the best of times runs on Sticky Tape and the tireless effort of Technicians working around the clock.
We will however continue to provide these public services for the benefit of the local community as we have done in the past with other titles not because it benefits us in some way, but because it benefits the community as a whole.
We trust that the community will understand and support our efforts in providing a stable and player friendly environment to play in.
Yes ladies...No one is paying Mweb for these servers. We are renting them from Gameservers who in turn use MWEB as the the data centres. When you understand that concept a lot of your lifes will get a lot less emo.
@Xerowing - How does the process actually work? Ordering etc. Do you have full control of servers, settings etc?
You Order through Gameservers.com as Fridge mentioned
Once you pre pay for your order you are given access to a server control panel, which basically allows you to manage the server instances on your account
No Hardware Access, but you do have settings related to the actual instance, ie, Friendly Fire on/off etc
Its good that we getting local server on board. About a month ago I was worried I was gonna have to stick to over seas servers
Who else is "hosting" public servers? Big up to iGame, any word from WA(wage) or SAIX(do gaming). Can't find info on mweb's website if they'll have public servers.

No-one else. Read this, get enlightened.
Always had a better ping on iGame with my Mweb connection, but will have to see how Mwebs servers are....
IRF Gaming will have 2 servers up on launch. Servers are not rented through Mweb but through Gameservers.com. They are the only ones who may host servers and are using Mweb's hardware as per agreement.
SPA will have one. I will post the details once the server is up.
We are going to have one or two as well!
