What follows are impressions of The Witcher 2 based on the limited preview code that Namco and CD Projekt recently released to the press. It’s the prologue and first chapter of the full game, and as such makes up a healthy chunk of play time. People are saying about ten hours, but I think I spent longer than that with it. I’ll avoid specific narrative spoilers, but I won’t be avoiding game-mechanic spoilers. What that means is that I’ll be talking about how the game works, but not that much about what actually happens. This is not a game where you want to know about the surprises.
So let’s take a look at everything else.

I have it on good authority that Borat (Geralt's well-known Kazakhstani ex-lover) will be available as one of Geralt's likely amorous conquests in future Witcher 2 DLC.
Joy be to Witcher fans.
And I have it on very good authority that you are an idiot.
Oi! lengthen

Nice preview from pc gamer. I especially like these comments, seem witcher 2 haven't been ruined by corporate influence like dragon age 2 was...

What stands out most about The Witcher 2 is – and believe me, it’s a rare big budget game that gives off this vibe – is that it feels like the game CD Projekt wanted to make, with neither apology nor compromise getting in the way of its vision. The engine targets high-end systems because that’s the only way to make it look this good. Characters happily drop words like ‘fuck’ and ‘cunt’ because it wouldn’t be The Witcher’s cynical world if they didn’t. Playing as Geralt doesn’t give you the same freedom of build and character as most other RPGs, because you’re not here to be a Paladin or a Mage, but a Witcher – a very specific mix of fighter, sorcerer and alchemist, with a steel sword for slaying humans, and a silver sword for monsters. Through the levelling system, you can tip the balance towards any of those disciplines, but you still need them all, because that’s how a Witcher rolls. Or makes heads roll, anyway.

CD Projekt Red finishes development on May 17-dated PC role-playing game.
It's nearly time for PC gamers to get hexed. Polish development shop CD Projekt Red has announced that it has finished development on The Witcher 2--the sequel to the acclaimed original--and that the game disc in now on its way to mass production.
That makes me happy :D!! Can't wait for this game!!!!Quote:
So much has changed since the original Witcher. Instead of using Bioware’s Aurora engine, Witcher 2 has its own custom-made slab of beauty. Combined with a behind-the-character view, it makes for incredible vistas, terrific scale, and the kind of graphical fidelity that makes a PC cry and Dragon Age 2 look like a school play.
First review from pc gamer uk, not sure if there is an issue with posting links to magazine scans. This wasn't removed at the official witcher forums but any such postings gets removed at other forums so mods go ahead if its against the rules:
Btw. I managed to cancel my steam preorder and switch to the gog version due to the exclusive preloading offered by gog.com. Also notice we have a public holdiday the day after witcher launches...

I'm interested in buying it from GOG, but how long before release will you be able to preload. This is an issue for me since on a 384k line it can take a number of days to download and having the game not finish before release day is no good. :)
Edit: Okay site says May 10 so that gives me 7 days. Now to find out just how large the download is.
I probably would've bought from GOG on principle, if I hadn't preordered on Steam when it first listed.
Also: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011...her-2-preview/
So excited! Now if only they'd released right before all these public holidays....
I did go with steam first but I canceled my preorder from them when I found out that only gog.com has preloading.
I just told them I want it canceled and refund because of no preloading. They refunded me in full, no questions asked. Just told me they only do refunds for preorders.
getting gog and the actual CE :)
Just as a matter of interest why are people getting the downloaded version of the game compared to the boxed issue from the shops?
I prefer the boxed version as it feels like I actually bought something with my money compared to just having a version that seems like I could have pirated from a friend as their is no real benefit down the line surely?
do you switch of your lights because you can't pat your electricity ?
do you kill yourself as you can't pat your feelings ?
do you eat your food cold as you can't pat the heat ?
do you stay awake because you can't pat your dreams ?
do you rip-off your head because you can't pat your memories ?
do you take out your GPU because you can't pat your programmable gpu calculations ?
do I toss away my iphone because I can't pat my songs ?
if you are religious; do you forsake god because you can't see him/her/it physically ?
Honestly how long do you really take out your CE contents and adore it ? Month ? Two months ? In the end like with all things it takes up space and I would take a good bet that it won't get the initial ZOMG as it did during the first month. It becomes a nice to have.
Seriously I don't get materialists, they sure do seem to have a problem when things are not 'pattable' you do know that both version's binaries are the same ? just because you can't roll around in your bed with the actual goods doesn't mean the product are any different nor would the experience be any less. GoG is the sister company of cdprojekt, no harm in supporting them if you want to. In fact in the long run it be better to support GoG over any other digital distro imho and at least with them you get fair trade, pic of free old game and DRM free.
:e
I guess being or knowing only materialistic mixed the coke-pop-culture, instant gratification, need of everything being handed and right of entitlement this then results in: nothing has worth unless it can't be interpreted into physical ownership, right ?
Well said Prophet. I have so many games on Steam that are magically backed up and patched that every time I have to whip out an old DVD game and hunt down patches, etc. I almost feel physical pain ;) I prefer all my media in digital form so I have backups and don't have to switch dvds/blurays/etc. to access it all.
Well yeah on my shelf I have my collection of games standing proud. Each of the games I love I collect and even today I still don't regret the fact that I have boxed compared to digital versions.
I have always enjoyed opening up the sealed package and flipping through the manual or any other goodies that come with the version while it installs. I love the new smell and feel.
To me it just gives the idea of owning something more tangible, it feels more worth it I guess.
O yeah, I don't have the money for the collectors edition, as much as I would have liked to go for it I don't have the cash coz of upgrading. So regular edition for me, but none the less still worth it
Steam has become a lot better than it used to be. It's not only a lot cheaper if you get your steam games via wage or at least have uncapped, but seriously a convenience. GoG is a nice balance to steam as it has sterling old games that I like to reply or missed out on.
I've yet to have one steam game
being scratched
being stolen
being delivered late
being out of stock
being allocated to wrong person
being only able to get it at certain stores
being only able to get it in certain times
being never on sale
being incomplete due to missing this or that inside the box
being opened and tampered with
being lost during transit
being told it's there and then arriving finding it's not
being pre-ordered and then told sorry there was actually not stock
being paid, waiting just to find out the order has not been processed
being on silly pricing even after a year or after it's released
...so many things to list. Such a lame excuse citing: 'I prefer the boxed version as it feels like I actually bought something'. Makes me thing of that typical RSA-er who doesn't want to pay for something at a certain price (which is reasonable), but can dish out dosh on dinners, jewellery, booze, braais, etc etc.
Serious? you get it on by going though a worthless 10-15 pagers manual ? It's been a very long time since we have games with decent casing, with decent manuals and was really worthwhile to get. Then you could honestly say I enjoyed the manual. My nwn manual is just as used as my monster and player manuals for dnd. You can actually see it's been read and used over just flipping through the so called 10-15 pager manuals you get these days that really don't contribute to the "worth" if you are really honest with yourself can cutting the manual delusion. You do know that they are going to stop making manuals and go with pdf, will you then toss away your game ?
What an excellent example of nothing for you has worth if it can't be translated into physical ownership.
You do know the method of saving money ? This is exactly what I did for my CE, pre-ordered and then collectively each month adding to cash stash for it. Seriously no excuse here imho.
Just because someone wants a box for a game doesn't make them a materialist... I have many CE's and many boxed PC games as well as 45 PS3 games on my shelf and I sure as hell ain't no materialist. I just like to collect games, more specifically: physical copies of games.
It does and having a ps3 makes it even worse. suppose you running ati as well with amd in that old pc. We all know that Nvidia, Intel, Iphone and Xbox is far more superior than that shitty ps3 and boxed games those are for spoilt brat babies. real men use steam. ok ek soek so bietjie kak met jou ook :}
The only game that I have pre ordered before was Starcraft 2. That I got on that night for R465, so it came with a price cut because of the pre order. Now its the Witcher 2 that I have pre ordered and I don't expect any problems.
Yeah games do get scratched, either download a no cd crack to avoid using the disk too many times or make an iso of it. Then I have a digital version. I do take very good care of my games so I haven't ever had a problem with it not working anymore due to scratches.
If it gets stolen then there is insurance to cover it.
Doubt BT Games will be out of stock on the first morning of it being released and for older games, I look elsewhere. If I still can't find it, then there is ordering from Take 2 etc. I never have though.
I never have had an incomplete copy of the game that is missing things, except when I bought a second hand copy of Crysis at Cash Crusaders. That however is Cash Crusaders fault as there was no cd key as the previous owner obviously pulled a fast one. How do you mean never being on sale? Cheaper prices or no stock? Often games go for cheaper, just do research. If no stock of current games most shops will order it in for you.
I only pay for games on delivery
How do you mean never being on sale
Well as per experience when I was looking for oblivion it was no where to be found and I had to get it at hyperama at steep price. Yes some stores do have sales, but hardly as on the same level as steam do. Sure they sale normally what you would consider old games or titles being almost a year or more older, but at least they do.
Often games go for cheaper
I don't see the fallout 3 goty for ±R190. That's what I've paid for it last night at 11pm. what store would have been open at that time ? a lot of pre-orders is on 10-15% discount. normally buying from a digital distro you don't have to pay on top of the price tag things like for example employee's salaries. Nor do steam require parking money or petrol.
just do research
Before I buy on steam/gog I do and mostly they are cheaper and more conveniently. I don't for example have to pay 1K for quake 1 or wait 15 working days for something that's out of stock here locally.
If no stock of current games most shops will order it in for you.
Same answer as above.
I would have to go a bit OT here and ask (I'm curious):
A) do you buy your music on cd or do you download the mp3 legally or illegally ?
B) do you go and watch movies at the cinema and or buy them or just download them ?
I loved the boxed packaging of the first one, even the boxed packaging of Starcraft 2 was awesome. The last recent game that I bought new was Darksiders - Hellbook edition, which I got for Christmas. That was R199,95. That was also a very decent packaging and at that price who could say no?
Even if they stop making physical manuals I will still go for the boxed copy. Yeah might not be as great anymore, but its still better then owning the digital thing which has nothing physical.
Yes, I do like physical ownership, obviously. But the reason is because I find it of better worth for my money.
Actually saving is what I did. Hence the upgrade that I went for compared to going for the cheaper route which would have offered less performance. Unfortunately some of us don't earn a whole hell of a lot to afford collector editions and upgrades and pay bills. Hence I get to get the game I want in a very nice packaging.
I don't bills, but 5 german chars right ;)
Look it's not that I don't by the boxes I still do, but there would have to be a really good reason for me to do so. I'd normally opt for steam just because imho the boxes of today doesn't make it worthwhile and it takes up space.
I guess only "fab" I have like this "obsessive" physical collecting is books. That I would agree in, because an actual book you don't have to switch on or can go flat, but with games and things alike like moves and music I don't mind getting the digital version over the actual version as in the end it's the same for me. I just wish we have proper digital distro channels and the dsl (with the network to support it) locally.
I'm yet to upgrade my other pc, but that is going to be costly as it's still a dual core with minor 8800GT in it. This is one of my rare months where I actually spend on gaming as so much is released together that either I want and my partner wants so that means 2x copies.
Same happened with my brother. But when he bought it and time passed the extra that he paid didn't bother him.
I do agree that buying digital can or usually is cheaper, but I reckon its purely because its a digital version so obviously you buying the game in its raw entity compared to all the inclusive packaging.
When you buy a digital copy of a game like Fallout 3 goty, how long does it take from purchase to being able to play. Downloads in SA are slow unless you are on a fast internet package or uncapped.
Yeah parking and petrol is a problem which is why when I do go, I usually take the gf and make a day of it. So those expenses do become that little more worthwhile.
Yeah 1k is ridiculous, but for example Quake 1 is a game I frequently see in the 2nd hand shops. For a game that I liked a lot back in the day I don't buy new because of that. I just hunt my ass off in 2nd hand places. Sometimes I am lucky, sometimes not. If I don't find it I find something else to curb my sadness.
I don't own much music, of the cd's that I do have, I bought. Most of the times its only a couple songs on an album that I like which I then download from filetube. As far as I know its ilegal, but its one song from an album, not the whole thing.
Movies I watch at the cinema. If its a movie that I really enjoyed I buy it. If not so much I don't really bother. Sometimes I get a pirated copy until I go buy the original, then I delete my copy off the pc.
Same here. Was initially only get the digital version but the ce was just too good to pass.
I am with prophet on this unless the game has some real special items I will go with the digital version. Services is usually a lot better. I have had steam/gamersgate respond on us and european public holidays while SA stores will not respond at all. I never waited longer then 24 hours for them to respond while with SA stores that's the exception and very rare, a lot of them only responds by the third email...
I also refuse to accept any order delay no matter the shipping reason, you knew the release date you make sure their stock on that date.
Also having recently had to format my pc when adding a ssd I can testify to the fact that reinstalling the digital copies is a lot faster then the disc based games.
Basicly if you are on uncapped then there is no practical reason to want the retail version.
Obviously
a lot quicker than waiting up too 20 or more working days. I've have a 4 meg, in RSA terms it's one night for a game and it's available. Even after I've bought fallout 3 goty It could have been played from the moment I wake where as with a shop if it was available I would have had to drive out, get it, come back, install it and patch it. This all after 9am for most shops IF they were even open.
It is and planning trips rather than just making them saves on both. So I normally tend to do all things possible that needs to be done in the same general area before leaving vs just driving around.
It is and that was the price quoted from wantitall. Still like to have the actual box of that particular game because it's one of those titles that I grew up with and made my first change from sprites to polygons. However other oldies I get via GoG and them steam as with all other "just normal" versions as I've said little point in getting the actual box.
One song or all songs it's all the same, you should be buying them to support the artist. I'm only recently started to get out of that habbit, but it's not so easy when you've been doing it for years. Though I would use Itunes as with my games for most things and some albums like metallica (old school) or other few bands I really dig all of their things even if it means 1 disc a month as even that is costly and I can't just go squandering out my cash. Well we all want to, but at end of the day we need to eat as well for example.
Reason why I asked this is at end of the day a game is also entertainment and if you just watch movies without buying them it would be imho same as just supporting digital then. I know it's nice to pat that ce contents, but still I've find even for myself it becomes a nice to have over just showing it off.
Yeah, thats more or less what I wanted to know was how much boxed is worth. Personally its worth the extra 100 - 200. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
I have all the Asterix and Oblix on pdf, but I would rather grow my current phyiscal book collection (around 17 of them :D)rather then just las it and stick with the PDF version that I have. Those are really a collectors and are difficult to find for under R110 each. To me its definately worth that R110 each
It's reverse for me. I've initially ordered the ce from bt and they managed as usaual to screw up the order just to be able to tell me the next day that sorry we let you order, but no stock. In a fit of rage I went over to GoG and pre-ordered from there. Then I saw that ce was available from take2 again (before like everyone had it availible again) and also ordered it. Which makes it great as my partner wants witcher 2 as well and there is really no point in getting 2x ce's and GoG will do with the actual ce. Besides I feel good as to supporting both cdprojekt and their sister company with that promotion.
I had steam people supporting me a few times at odd hours with them actually coming back and then doing something about it VS some people you ask to phone you back and they actually never do. Not to mention the fact that at times you can't followup with a store as the people in it are away on some special day or three.
I agree and it's even worse when you are able to order from a website just to be told the very next day that it's not available. Seriously I do corporate sites as part of getting my bacon and I do know you can do it properly as with fact that updates to it can be instant.
Or to find that your drive is furbar, can't read the disc or discs somehow went missing.
Basically yes, Basicly no :D
