Do you think games are getting easier?

I would say that games back then were harder to beat (Level 178 of Pac-Man:mad:) but when it comes to games that I enjoy playing I would say that the modern generation of games are definitely more enjoyable, although they are easier. Not all of the games are easy though, look at Demon's Souls. That game is hellishly tough but still damn fun to play :D

What I think it boils down to is A.I and online MP. Games like Medal of Honor, Tomb Raider... all had kak A.I which makes the game soooo much more easier to play so then developers like IW (With CoD) put programs in their game so that if you're doing to well the program kicks in and you die all the bloody time for the next few mins.

And then there is online MP. Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing I for one love MP, but I just think because of MP no one tries to give their game that something special anymore so we end up with a kak SP experience and a buggy online experience! I also think the pressure from their parent companies also lowers the quality, but not to the extent that everyone pins on them. I think most developers are lazy, plain and simple.

My 2c: Bring back the well balanced games that require you to engage your brain and not sit around as if you are watching a movie..
Oddworld: Abes Odysee comes to mind.
I find alot of games nowadays tend to have a very linear and boring singleplayer component. (Final Fantasy XIII - R700 i wont get back lol) That have alot of shiney graphics and cutscenes but really, games should be all about the (gasp!) GAMEPLAY!
I hate to use this as a reference again, but Final Fantasy XIII is so easy they give you an "Auto-Battle" button, that you can bash entirely through the whole game and complete it.. seriously!

I fully agree with Maplassie, Easier games - More accessible - Profit!

Sadly the pasionate game developers of the 80's, 90's are hard pushed by big corperates to produce profit. I think very few developers are actually working on Projects they enjoy, and when they do something outstanding is usually produced - Uncharted 2 anyone?

Great article! Really enjoyed reading it, now leave me to my nostalgia.

You don’t know this yet, but you’re about to lose. Guess you better backtrack until you find that bulletproof vest in the janitor’s closet at Seaworld.

It's funny cause it's true.
Miss those days. And the 'get the green key to open this door to get the blue key to open the next' moments. These days, just follow the NPC with the word FOLLOW on his head.

I'de say games are easier. I don't even have to look back 10 years to find some games I still can't finish. Some RTS games like Stronghold and Act of War's Expansion, High Treason use the mosty anoying methods of making the game hard by removing the one unit or structure that would win that mission for you. I can't even get past the 1st 3 stages of any of the Commandos (Top Down ones) and that's WITH a walkthrough. But those might still be explained by the fact that I've never been good at strategy games anyways. I can't play any of the Serious Sam games on anything harder than normal, it's just not in my skill set.

But beyond those games have sometimes been unsatesfyingly easy. Need For Speed Underground 2 up to Carbon start out pretty tough, but once you load in a few upgrades, you just zoom by everybody. And there are many games that work pretty much the same.

Yes games are easier today just bec they need to reach more people to make more profit.

Back then games where being made for the hardcore market. Take unreal that game was very very hard:D

I miss the days when you would get stuck at a level and that feel of success you get when you actually get passed it. Today when I play the game I feel drained and meh. To much going on(black ops)and no breathers to add to the atmosphere.

Ok there are new games that are hard(two worlds 2 and stalker clearsky)

I remeber when CIII came out. It didn't have any difficulty settings, when they were patched in it was revealed that the default was Hard (They patched in Very easy, Easy, Normal and Very Hard) The problem with the two easy settings was that they removed a lot of features from the game. And then people came to the forums asking how they should play on normal.

i really like puzzles in games, e.g. in FPS games, but the puzzles have become so basic as of late =/ Was nice when in between shooting things in the face you got to use your brain a bit.

And when you solve a difficult puzzle, its also really rewarding

Trials HD and Super Meat Boy.

There are some extremely hard games lately, but a lot more easy ones. Sometimes it's nice to just play through a easy game and enjoy the story.

Super Meat Boy is great because of its difficulty, i think that contributed to its success.

It's also an Indie game though :)

Trials HD

Ah man the only title the PSN needs. I loved this on the xbox (when I still had one) and it is a very challenging game.

I had the privilege of firing Contra up again on the NES the other day, and was alarmed at how much I struggled with it. So I guess in a sense games are a bit easier today (in some instances) but offer a lot more.
