Default Is this guitar any good?

Its the alesis x. I've been playing acoustic guitar for a while now and would like to make the jump to electric, seeing as I'm a beginner this guitar seems to be a nice "noob" guitar.

Is it too gimmicky? Am I better off purchasing another guitar and then getting the pedal fx later? I love it coz its got everything built in and I can plug a set of headphones in and play without driving everyone else to drink.

They don't make them any more and yes it is just a gimick.

You won't get a good sound from that guitar

Do you have an amp? get a Ibanez GIO starter kit and start from there. It is a perfect starting guitar trust me on this. Just get it a proper set up. Don't know if they do Starter kits anymore but get a Ibanez Gio and ask them what is a good amp. I would say a roland cube 40 for R2500.

I thought so. No, no amp. I'm doing a quick google search on the ibanez gio, seems like a lot of people are suggesting it as a "starter" guitar.

Um, not necessarily. It might be right for you, but everyone has their own idea of the perfect axe.

Sockmonkey, bear in mind there are a ton of different starter kits with noob axes and practice amps, so the best thing you can do is to go to your local music store and have a fiddle with each of them and see what feels right to you.

If you're going to go Ibanez though rather shell out a bit more and get something slightly higher than one of those GIO guits; the SA series is very well priced for what you're getting. (I had an SA160QM a couple years back and it was damn sexy.) The other problem with the GIO kits (well, at least the one that I saw) is that the guitar had a floating bridge, a definite no-no if you're just starting out on electric.

If you do buy separately though make sure to put more money into the guitar at this stage rather than the amp: you can always upgrade the amp later.

Thanks Rustpuppet, Ill keep all that in mind. Ill have a look at some local shops here, surely they must get loads of requests for beginner guitars.

I'm also looking at maybe getting one of those Vox mini amps to start off with, they fairly cheap and I can play without disturbing others.

Nothing wrong with a tiny amp to start with. Bigger and better amps also make your mistakes more obvious so it's better to start small for your self esteem's sake

Go check in store, you will find something to suit your pocket.

I would suggest trying out a Squire strat, its fenders budget model, but it is a decent axe.

You can get them in a bundle with an amp for a decent price.

Those Squires are awesome beginner guitars, but as everyone says, go to a shop for an afternoon and try a couple. Also don't worry about effects pedals just yet, or look for some in cash converters etc.

Yeah effects pedals and stuff can come later.

Ive been playing for about 14 years now and I don't even have any effects pedals other than a distortion pedal and a Jim Dunlop wah wah
