The second release of firmware 3.56 doens't fix jack shit I'm afraid. Allow me to elaborate:
Last night when I got home from work and switched my PS3 on I was greeted with the "red screen of death" as it seems to be called. I have since then concluded that this error was caused as a result of my hdd becoming corrupted and I have pretty much confirmed this by swopping the 250GB hdd (I put it in myself, it's the corrupted one) and the original 80GB hdd that came with my PS3 back-and-forth. As soon as I put the 80GB in the red screen was gone and when I put the 250GB back in it returned.
I then put the 80GB back in to see if I could get my PS3 working again (I am picking up my Killzone 3 Helghast Edition tomorrow, after all). Turns out the 80GB still has firmware 3.40 (or older, not sure) on and the PS3 has some kind of internal storage thing (think it was called a nand or something?) which has firmware 3.56 (and the bug) on it. (Obviously) in order for the PS3 to boot, these two versions of the firmware must match. Here's where this bug comes in. The PS3 tells me to "insert storage media containing firmware 3.56 or later" and then press START and SELECT together so it can update the hdd's firmware to 3.56. As soon as I do that though, it checks the USB and then I get a message saying the data is corrupted. I have googled this and found that this a very common problem, it basically affects anyone trying to change their hdd (for whatever reason) after the release of firmware 3.56.
Apparently the only solution is to wait for Sony to release a new firmware, presumably 3.60, and even then it still might not work as a result of the bug being stored on the PS3's internal nand(?) and not the hdd itself. In other words, either a new firmware will solve this problem or I will soon be the proud owner of a big, shiny R5000 doorstop/paperweight.
Sorry for the long ass post, tried to keep it as short as possible.
