Play games, not platforms
Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Silent Hill 2, my two favorite horror games, hands down. The Penumbra titles are also great survival horror games.
Most other horror games rely too much on shock/gore, you become acclimated to it very quickly and it loses its effect 5mins into the game. This is by far my biggest gripe with the Dead Space series as horror games. Fun games, but they don't do the whole horror thing very well, by the end of the opening scene they've shoved it all in your face. Oppressive atmosphere, fear of the unknown, playing on all your childhood fears and PACING, that's what really gets under your skin and keeps you awake at night.
In AVP 2 sometimes the Predator campaign was also a little creepy.
The singularity is about to explode! Weapons are at maximum.

Scariest game of all time was alone in the dark 1. It came out when I still had my 486. After that FEAR scared the crap out of me. I HATE it when they use kids in scary movies etc. Reminds me of the grude.![]()
That's a recipe for growing your stalker-base, if ever I saw one...
