Hmmm....based on some of the reviews I have read, console games are also not without their glitches. The Last Remnant on Xbox360 is said to have left something to be desired and slowdowns cropped up in the PS3 version of Skate.

Given that the developers are programming for a tandardised platform, surely this sort of thing should not be happening?

...whereas some might prefer to just get on with the game. I would think that hitting the enemy is rather high on one's list of priorities.

For me pc gaming started going downhill when the GeForce 3 and similar ATI became the mainstream graphics cards. Before that games generally worked, the only real issues being the transition from Win9x to Win2k, or from Dos to Win9x.
I have never had any of those issues. If you keep your drivers and software up to date and don't try to run your games on an under powered pc the chances of you having any of those issues you mentioned are small. Bugs generally gets fixed by a patch either officially or community quickly.
