The commander can also play the map as per normal, but normally a commander finds a safe hidey spot and has a overview of the game the whole time by means of looking at the map on large scale. He deploys the UAV over a certain area. He can order in arty strikes to certain spots. He can also call in supply drops to a certain squad who request. He can also scan the map every few seconds with a radar to spot enemies ad then when he spots them on the map, you can see them on the mini map.
So a good commander can make a BIG difference to winning a map.
Not sure though if I'd miss a commander tho. I liked that in BC2 you could call your own uav or mortar strikes. Because as is the nature of the beast, there is normally some prick who grabs the commander seat in each round and only plays to boost his score or help out only his mates. I would rather consider something like a squad leader who has similar abilities, but those abilities can only be benefited from by that squad.
