Default black ops last ditch effort to fix this issue

    Hey All

for a long time now since BO was released I have only had one small annoying probelm, i have tried almost everything and dont know where to turn so this is my last ditch effort to sort this issue out.

    The Annoying problem:

Often during gameplay(mutli) my frames would randomly freeze for 1 to 3 sec, once unfreezed i would teleport a few meters ahead IF i was running or even just moving, almost seems like a delay and my pc is having to catch up, this is what it seems like....

another small issue is the FPS going up and down from 90fps somethimes down to 35 fps, harly consistent really, usually when view a larger area of a map this occurs but limited to that only.

Now my setup (something im begining to question)

CPU is AMD Phenom X3 8650 and the required min spec is the 8750

the difference between the two: 8650 runs at 2.3 ghz, 8750 at 2.4 ghz, this is the ONLY difference. However my X3 8650 is OC to a mild 2.6GHz and is stable by all means, no excess heat etc no crashes during other games.

Graphics is Nvidia GtS250 1GIG edition this card replaced my 9600GT, allowing me to put things like shadows on ect...things like Glow and FOV are off.

Memory is 6GIG ram in total

This is what i have my settings as in BO

    RES: 1600x900
    AA X4
    Shader warming: yes
    Texture: Auto
    Antroscopic filtering is OFF

    on the flip side...

I have tried setting mutli GPU to 1 or 0, neither seemed to have made any difference
I have also tried setting Multithreaded device to 1 or 0, again, no difference

it baffles me and im not sure what to do here on...im starting to think my CPU just isnt good enough for this game, i find it hard to believe but oh well, lets see what you gusy have to say!

    Thanks All

Lets see if I can help you, as youre not getting any other replies. I will just flow through answers on your post.

The 'Playing Catchup' tells me something is being processed, and the fact that you move forward after the freeze suggests it's not your Processor because the data gets there eventually then you move.

FPS drops in large area's is just that, your FPS is dropping in a big area because there is so much more to render, Black Ops aint coded very well on the visual front, it doesnt look much prettier than say MW2 but runs 50% worse. This is where I believe your problem is coming in.

Your CPU which is a little underspec is OK I rate what you really should be doing is setting EVERYTHING to the lowest possible setting, and moving upwards SLOWLY from there to determine where and what is slowing you down. Do these tests in that big low FPS area to see real changes.

Im sure we'll find your GTS250 is struggling, the 1gig of RAM on the thing suggests the manufacturer was trying to make up for something else lacking by adding the usual 'MOAR RAM' gimmick. In my opinion you are playing in video settings to High for the card, you need to drop that resolution, drop the AA, set that texture setting to manual (Medium or Low), leave the AF off and remember FOV has nothing to do with performance.

In short, start low and work up on your visual settings. Google a tweak guide also, Tweakguides.com normally has some very informative stuff.

Then theres all the usual crap, make sure your drivers are the latest, Video, Sound, Motherboard. Check your defrag status on the game drive. Reinstall the game.

    Good Luck

Yeah thats probably the best solution.

I have a gts250 1 gig and I have absolutely no problems with the game. My graphics are set to high, but the only thing i dropped is the AA, that chows memory.

    Good luck man

    Try the following

    Shadows - OFF
    Anistropic Filtering - OFF

then in your console type the following:

    /com_maxfps 125
    /cl_maxpackets 100
    /cl_packetdup 2
    /snd_losOcclusion 0
    /r_multithreaded_device 1
    /r_multigpu 0

    Hey All

    thanks for the help

The past fews dats have turned put quite intresting for me

i decided to reset the config in BO

so i started with everything on the lowest settings

Turns out the card can infact handle the EXTRA setting on textures
Turns out it can handle AA X4 even at X8
Turns out the depth of field, glow, distortion is also not a problem either
the resolotion also makes no difference in FPS
so here is where i seemed to have found the solution
i decided for the hec of it to turn multi_threaded device off, i read in alot of forums that this is infact an option to try, so did
    and....

no more freezing up, infact it would only do this freeze up when shadows are on or AA was set at X8

now even with those on the game was never choppy or laggy

im pretty sure now that the cpu isnt just quite that good! i also decided to bring the Ghz down abit on the CPU, seem to have actually improoved the situation too, getting frames up to 100 now. My best bet now is to get the Phenom II X4 3.2GHZ or an aftermarket CPU cooler and get things abit more stable

either way i conclude that the CPU is cause my GPU to not preform at its best

but still...BO as stated above 50% less pretty than MW2 and 50% less optimised....what were these DEVS doing....

Dude, I have found that even with my card, setting the textures to one lower than EXTRA makes a huge difference.
