Gainward Nvidia GTX 580 review (MyGaming)

A decent card.

The pricing is what got me into my HD6970 though.
Gigabyte HD6970 @ R3700.

Still happy with that purchase.
If I had the extra money though, it sure would not have been wasted on the 580...

Nah, still happy with my 5870. Still kicks ass and only a few FPS behind the 6970. THe 6xxx range was/is simply a filler from AMD to compete with the 5xx Nvidia series. They are nothing special over the 5xxx series. Nothing really significantly bigger or better.

As for Nvidia's monster, hey, if I had the cash with nothing else to buy, I'd get it.

What would you guys think of pairing 2 of these GTX 580's with an Intel 980X CPU @ 4GHz? I'm a bit concerned about the small amount of memory that this card has. It's very fast, but 1.5GB of memory is a bit small considering that the AT...er...AMD competition has been using 2GB of memory for a while now. So whilst putting 2 of these in SLi with a hugely fast CPU is extremely tempting - it somehow doesn't make sense?

I paid R4000 for MSI 570GTX TwinFrozr/OC Edition and I'm very happy with it. I don't believe in buying the biggest and baddest when it gets released, imo it is always overpriced and if you have to compare the one just below top end it is not worth the money....
e.g. look at the i7 990 that has been released... $999 for a CPU... must be smoking something VERY good to pay that amount of money!

But I am considering buying another 570 :)

Tomshardware has shown the new AMD's to be EXTREMELY powerful in CrossFire.
That's where most of the dev-time was spent on em - Perfecting CrossFire.

Hi guys,

I've purchased two GTX 580's for my machine. I'm currently running two GTX 280's in SLi with a 9800GT for dedicated PhysX. From what I've read, I know the two 580's will be a proper boost in performance, but I'm very curious to see what the poor old 9800GT does when it's still used for dedicated PhysX. Apparently, the system should be faster if I take out the 9800GT completely and let PhysX be handled by the two 580's. Whether or not that's true remains to be seen.

I'm doing some "pre-install" benchies to see what exactly we're looking at. I'll post my findings if any of you guys are interested.

Okay so this is kinda of interesting. I replaced my two GTX 280's with the new GTX 580's and kept my 9800GT in my PC to handle the PhysX (dedicated). I tested 3DMark Vantage and my score was about 43,000....I did a little experiment to see what would happen if I took out the 9800GT and just left the PhysX to run on either of the GTX 580's (not dedicated) - after running 3DMark Vantage again, my score shot up to near 47,000.

It looks like I'm actually slowing my system down by using a 9800GT as a dedicated PhysX card. That's nuts!

Heh, that's kinda strange. Perhaps you should post your results on the Nvidia forums, wonder what those okes will have to say about this.

Hi Imber,

I did a bit of research on this and it seems to be a pretty grey area at the moment. Some other people online also have the same config as what I (strange enough) and they also said that their 9800GTs would work better in some applications than in others. Apparently in synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark Vantage, a dedicated PhysX card has some "issues" but you'd see the benefit in real world games. However, I disagree because games like Batman and Mafia 2 show no difference with or without the 9800GT set to dedicated PhysX - lol - It's another one of "those" topics again. I suppose the one comment that changed my opinion on this was that you need to ask yourself whether it actually matters or not, because not a lot of games even support PhysX anyways. And that made me think.
