Thread: new to higher graphic cards specs PROBLEM

Default new to higher graphic cards specs PROBLEM

I am trying to install a ASUS GTX 460 CU on a MSI 790XT G45 (with AMD quad)
IT ONLY HAS 450 POWER SUPPLY
    The card is not recognized
I have connected the auxillary plug to power

Could it be that the GPU senses that the voltage is marginal and refuse to start ???
I have ordered a 750 watts hoping it will fix the problem
If it does not what other alternative short of the card faulty ???

yes it sounds like insufficient power to me, other guys might have better insight but the bigger psu is never a bad investment

    Play games, not platforms

One of my buddies got a new card which only worked after he installed new windows. It simply wouldn't pick up on XP... (not sure what you are running atm, just adding my 2 cents)

Depends what you mean that the card is not recognized. Do you get display at all on boot up with it? If not, then you might need a BIOS update.

If you are getting display, but you can't load drivers, then possibly a power issue.

Sounds like a power issue dude. I think your CPU needs at least about 200 - 250 Watt by itself. A modern day GPU would use about the same amount. So that's already too little power, without even considering your motherboard, hard-drives and everything else. Definitely a power issue.

Please explain what you mean by "the card is not recognized"? Does you PC boot into windows or do have a blank screen?
My ignore list: growing too fast to keep updating.

THANKS FOR THE ANSWERS CHAPS !

    wINDOWS vISTA 64
Booting exactly as if there was no card
And the "beeps" complain about it

There is no display at all so I cannot say if windows boots
Also the card does not get warm ,the fan runs.
It is the reason that made me think it is the GPU booting that senses a voltage too low as the load is drawn
and then it switches off the on card regulators

Althoug its the most obvious yet overlooked question. Have you set the PCIe slot to be selected as the primary display?

Easy way to tell, plug the monitor into your onboard GPU, if you get display then make sure to check what the preference for GPU display is, the fan runs, means its getting power, may not be enough though, but it shoudl technically still boot, just wont run very well in-game cause of less power. If you have set PCIe as the primary display for GPU, then its probably the power supply, 450w isnt enough anyway if your planning on running games

There was a Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT 1.00 Gb before
    I had to change it to run IL2 C o D
I had to put it back to run
It is working perfecly for IL2 and all the mods
So I'll wait for the power supply
Thank you all for your kind help
