As of late a large bit of the dislike is being directed towards the usage of CGI in the new Berserk series set to come out later this year. I believe it is stemming from the 3 films that where released back in 2012 and 2013. It made use of both standard 2D animation and also mixed in a bit of 3D animation to animate larger scenes.
I will admit, that there was a few flaws and some bad scenes had some bad facial animation at some points. It could have been fixed with different camera angles and better editing. However that did not detract me from disliking the entire series of films, which I hold in high regard.
It all falls down to aesthetic and the visual style the production company is aiming for. It is important that the anime looks as similar to the style and aesthetic used in the manga it comes from. While Berserk would look amazing if it was all 2D hand drawn, it would need the budget of a Hollywood studio to do that. While the transition from manga to anime is not always applied and the very real lack of funds to production costs, 3D animation is then used. Despite Liden Films being a new production company if they manage to balance the 2D/3D animation in the series well enough, then it should be a great success. Either way I will definitely enjoy it regardless of the animation style used.
