It's watchable as a stand alone, but I would highly recommend that if you are going to watch Carnival Phantasm at a later stage that, you watch FATE/Zero and FATE/Unlimited Blade Works. There is also FATE/Stay Night which is similar to Unlimited Blade works but tells a slightly different story. These serve as the basis of all the parodies and humor in the series.
