I wouldn't go as far as saying Monogatari is better than DN - in fact, I wouldn't compare the two because they are so different. But the dialogue (and humour) in Bakemonogatari is incredibly sharp and enjoyable. DN spent a bit too much time being dark, although it was a fascinating exploration of how power can corrupt the psyche of even a well-meaning person. And it's firmly grounded in reality, if you can ignore the bit about killing people by writing their name down.
