Sony admits utter PSN failure: your personal data has been stolen

Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.

In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario.

U mad?

Are you an Xbox user Vixe?

They warned us to be on the lookout, and arent sure if they did get all credit card information... Mad yes maybe i am but not so much with Sony as i am with the Person or Persons that are responsible for the hacking the network... Cards can be changed that not an issue, and i check my account everyday anyway. Its more now more about how secure are all online purchases case SONY was ussing SSL protocals much like everyone else. kind of makes you rethink online purchases case nothing stop the hacker from going after, MS Live, or Amazon, or any other big brand with CC facilities.

All we can do is either waste money in trying to pro actively change everything or monitor what we have and see if we become victims, either way time will tell.

That sounds pretty bad! I hate it when stuff like that happens... I mean all your personal info along with vital info like credit card details are in the hands of hackers :/ makes me so angry

The comment you raised about hackers going after any other big brand are not entirely relevant in this case, you are talking about two different systems.

PSN/LIVE etc are not only digital sales platforms but are test environments for developers, with ultiple external users connected to the Development side of the paltform and titles for it allowed access to the Inner Ring of PSN Access Servers for testing and development purposes.

Amazon etc are pure sales portals, no external developers, so all of their access is user root controlled, allowing only INTERNAL staff access to client databses or inner ring services.

That said though I would not be entirely shocked if MS now implement some forced secruity checks on their side to safeguard LIVE

If this is Anonymous, they are really not making any friends with people who actually want to play their PlayStations

Just saw on the local news that overseas banking institutions have issued new credit cards to their customers with ps3 online accounts :/

>implying that Anonymous is a single entity.

Not really what I'm getting at, just saying if this was one of their anti-Sony missions, or if it's done by someone within their ranks, or in their name, whatever, they're hurting users as well as Sony, and that's not going to win them any support from the public

They don't want support from the public. They want to permanently harm Sony, and if they can effect the users in a negative way, then Sony will always have a bad reputation. Always. The hackers have done their real harm in ruining Sony's future sales.

Sony finally sent out notifications....

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

Kinda glad I never used a credit card on PSN. Either way, my personal info is now out there. Someone's probably buying a Russian Mail Order Bride with my e-mail address right about now. God dammit...

Well if I get any mail asking for my credit card number I'll reply with rather nasty comments :p That should be fun!

I think this whole hacking was such an inconvenience, not only does it place Sony in an awkward spot but most of their users are doubting the security measures that Sony has in place, they really need to up their game now.
