Sony being sued over PSN security breach

If this was a service you paid for then people could start filing class action suits but its a FUCKING FREE SERVICE!

I weep for the human race.

This is exactly why I haven't been bashing Sony. If I was paying for the online services I would have had many a bad thing to say about them. However, if my credit card data was compromised then free service or no, they need to challenged.

Who cares what you think - douche.

Wow great first post, your off to a brilliant start. Now lets see if you can bang those two brain sells of your together long enough to come up with a reply that carries any kind of connection to the topic at hand, that is if they don't get distracted by the pretty pictures at the top of the screen.

I agree which is why i never put my credit card details into the ps3, i don't even trust my paid xbox live account with this. All things considered if a person saw what happened after the geohot incident and didn't remove their cc details simply as a precaution then well... they are idiots. After they cracked the ps3 and those rumors started milling around that hackers could now get to all our precious personal data I immediately put in bogus home addresses and stuff.

Explain to me then, by your logic, how this law suit holds merit? Seeing as PSN is a free service?

Dude don't waste ur time, i get a feeling all our IQs will drop by several points if it actually had to explain its logic.

1.Yes PSN is a free service. But some of us are PSN + members. A service we pay for.
2. When you buy DLC you also need to use your credit card details to purchase the items in order to download it.

So, taking this into consideration this lawsuit might hold some merit.

PSN boasts roughly what 40 million users world wide, how many of those do you think are PSN+ members. Also PSN plus does little but give you a few good deals at the store and the odd exclusive demo, the majority of the PSN network's backbone is still free, MP all that. Where as Xbox live silver (the free one) gives you access to all except MP and certain content where as gold (the pay for service) adds MP and selected content. So the majority of Xbox live user pay for their service ergo MS has capital to pump into it thus making it better, where PSN remains mostly free little to no capital is generated and since it is free you can not start demanding service since you don't pay for it.

You can just buy a voucher, no need for any credit card details.

What was the point of this comment?

Its a discussion on what you think about Sony getting sued, if you have not agreed with OMEGA then you could have made a valid arguement and not become rude...

Back on topic, I think to sue sony over the Breach is pretty harsh, and it is a free service and for the people that were worried about the credit cards, you didnt need to punch your numbers in as sony had provided an alternative call PSN vouchers which you could have used. Playing online was free, you only paid for premuim content and on some rare occasion that was also free.

If you worried about you Credit card have it cancelled, it simple and quick and you can have a new one in two weeks or so. As for email scams and phising scams you should be well aware of that, and it woulfd of happened with or without the breach, how much of you can honestly say that they havent recieved a scam mail before this?

Agreed it might hold merit to a select few, but then only those that pay have the right to sue really if they sueing for the correct reason, and if i read the FAQ on the Sony Playstation blog correctly they were looking into refunding PSN users or something.

As i previously stated and omega, if you were sceptical then the voucher would havve been an alternative.

I still agree that since PSN is indeed a free service there wouldn't be too much of a need to get down their throats. Sharing personal details online will usually always be a risky business but people do it because they put their trust in the company they sharing it with. I personally wouldn't give out credit card details and personal info because of something like this happening. Fortunately I stick to Xbox Live but even so i use prepaid membership cards and points...much safer!

They won't get anywhere in this lawsuit.

PSN terms and Conditions (which they all obviously had to agree to) clears Sony (and partners) of any and all responsibility in the event something would go offline, get stolen, get lost, burn down, rediscover the wheel, freeze your butter, or otherwise impregnate your dog.

Just to pay devil's advocate a little here. If you bought your PS3 with aim to play online, you need to use the PSN. Thus Sony needs to protect the service, because while you might not be paying directly to use the service, you did spend R3000+ to use it and this does give you a small amount of room in which to whinge and I suppose sue.

I'm just putting this out there as an argument. Not sure how much weight it holds, but just a thought. For the record, I couldn't care less about PSN, as I will never use my PS3 for online MP. Holds no interest for me.

Strange, that thought hasn't even crossed my mind, but it's true. Wtf! Can you even sue someone if it's a free service?! Although, on the other hand, this can turn out to be quite a complex case.

Who's fault is it for getting their details exposed? The client, or SONY? Obviously it's SONY's fail, but the client DID use the services, and it's not like the things buy there is exclusive to PSN, or is it?

Absolutely you can sue them if its a free service. Facebook, Steam, Impulse, Paypal, Lord of the Rings Online, Google etc. They are all free and can hold some very sensitive information which they are legally responsible for safeguarding, regardless of terms and conditions.

Your thoughts are leaning towards XBL vs PSN subscriptions. You are not paying XBL to protect your privacy, they have to do that before money and subscriptions even comes into the equation. Think very carefully about it, imagine having to pay everyone who you didn't want to leak your private information, that line of thinking is madness.
