It's basically going to turn into a clash of politics vs religion - I'm sure the Muslim scholars will argue the point, and I would most likely agree with them, but they're looking at things from a religious point of view, while governments have to look at a much bigger picture. Politics trumps all I'm afraid, and nobody really want's to piss off the US - trigger happy as they are.

As to whether he is dead or not, I doubt the US would make such claims only to see him appear on youtube standing in front of the white house holding today's Washington Post or something. The Yanks are not always the brightest, but I hope they are not that stupid. I think the question should rather be when did OBL actually die? I reckon they offed him a LONG time ago and have merely been keeping it until they needed some good ol' morale boost.
