It's the same old story...everything on the Audi is optional, whereas the polo is almost fully loaded...as standard. Look at the dsg gearbox and flappy paddles on the polo, standard. Check out the leather and suede seats...standard on the polo. Seriously, the A1 is overpriced in almost every aspect.

No it's not. Even with the DSG box against a manual G6 GTI, the G6 will beat it in the 0-100 sprint. The Polo hits the 100kph mark in around 6.7 seconds, the G6 will do it in 6.5 seconds (if you know how to shift). When you add DSG to the G6 mix, you cut another 0.3s off the 0-100 time...
And once you're past 100kph, that Polo will fall off the pace faster than a fat man in the 100m sprint...
Anyway, back on topic. The Golf 6 is a REALLY nice car. I still think it's overpriced for what you get - especially when you add the extras on - but that's SA for you. Alternatives in the hot-hatch crowd though?
Mazda 3 MPS (extremely fast, more noticeable in a crowd, handles like a pig, average interior).
Focus ST (I've got one, so I'll leave you to make up your mind about it. Absolutely adore my car though).
C30 T5 (Focus ST in pretty outfit. Downright gorgeous car, but expensive and unbelievably cramped inside).
Astra OPC (Powerful, average handling, average interior and specs. Not in production anymore, so you'd have to get a 2nd hand one).
Civic Type-R (Amazing looking car, great specs, but awfully high price given the downright asthmatic engine. Especially at reef altitude).
A3 2.0T (Golf 5 GTI in an uglier body. Same engine as the G5. Decidedly more expensive with extras).
BMW 125i Coupe (Lovely car. Priced as a BMW normally is - i.e. omgwatthefuck. Bullet-proof motorplan. Normally aspirated engine isn't that much fun at the reef).
A1 (Yeah, not worth it at all tbh. Absurdly overpriced, underspecced, underpowered, fuck-ugly backend).
Alfa Mito (same problem as A1. And it's an Alfa, so it'll break more often than your voice after you've been kicked in the nuts).
DS3 (fucking hot car TBH. Unfortunately French, which means it's likely to be as reliable as the Alfa. But when it breaks down, atleast it will break down in a classy French manner...)
That pretty much sums it up. In the end, I came down to a choice between the G6 GTI and the Focus ST. The Golf was more expensive with options, MUCH plainer looking, no more reliable and didn't have the unbelievably awesome sound of the ST. It was, however, better put together inside, had more options available and was more fuel efficient. Second time I test-drove the ST, I was sold though. Put in my order then and there...
So yeah, been where you are right now, and I don't envy you such a tough decision. Let us know what you pick though

Dirt shows up like a bastard on that colour G6. Same as my ST. Be prepared to wash it every weekend to keep it clean...

Whoever said Scoobies were unreliable - no. Just no. You can thrash those things within an inch of their lives, and they'll come back for more. The only time the fun stops is when you need to replace the brakes. Which are covered by motorplan. Or when you run out of petrol, cause MAN those STIs chug fuel.

I chose the Golf 6 GTi due to the DSG gearbox, the xenons and new daytime running lights. Also, I prefer the interior of the G6 GTI. I know it's expensive, but once you sit in it you really "feel" that it's expensive as well - which is a good thing. Getting back to the DSG, I think it's excellent. No more "drivers knee" during traffic jams - just relaxed driving in traffic and F1 style paddle shifts on the open road when I want to. Perfect. Plus the sound for the G6 GTi's is not too shabby either hey?
I don't think I'll be able to keep up with ST's (although that's a hot debate) - but I've heard that a Revo remap can do wonders for the G6 GTI's. I'll have to wait and see what it's like after the warranty expires
p.s I don't mind washing my car every weekend. Usually the more difficult a car is to keep clean, the prettier they look when they ARE clean - so it's an incentive to me. I love washing my car anyways.
p.p.s I totally agree on your opinions on the other cars - it's uncanny.
p.p.p.s (??) I have to mention that the same day I'm getting my car I will also be replacing the standard 18" wheels that it comes with with 19" wheels - something a bit more special. I've seen a couple of G6 GTI's with 19" wheels and it looks HOT!![]()

Yeah, we could definitely chat for ages about this. And the perennial ST vs GTI debate :P
The xenon thing is fucking annoying. The models overseas all have xenons as an option, but we get completely screwed here in SA. No cruise control as standard, no climate control for the 3 door, no satnav, no xenons, no keyless entry. Very very fucking annoying.
No two ways about it, the G6 DSG is a frikken awesome car. Personally, I don't dig the DSG - still prefer a good old manual to do my shifting, but a few more years of sitting in traffic may well change my opinion![]()
The sound on the G6 isn't bad, but dude, it's honestly not a patch on the 5-pot in the ST. And once you start adding mods to the ST (new exhaust and intake, primarily), then in that department it really is a one-horse race. But that does bring me to my next point - both our cars are insanely moddable. There are guys driving around in 300wkw STs and GTIs. Absolute madness
Regarding the ST vs GTI debate - I try not to get (too) involved. At the end of the day it comes down to the driver. The DSG makes it a lot easier for you, but if you mess up and I launch the ST properly (not the easiest prospect - SOOOO much torque) I'll keep the lead.
PS - yep, agreed on that point. Just a bitch keeping them clean, swirl-free and shiny. I'm turning into a car detailer thanks to my ST...

PPPS - let me know what the ride comfort is like. Also prepare your wallet for a hit. I had to replace my one 18" tire after getting a nail in the sidewall - R2500 with only 11 000km on the tire...

R2500 per tyre, for an 18"?? Ouch dude. I had 225/40 R18's on my Jetta and paid R1100 per tyre. It was "achilles" brand tyres, but I swear, I'd by them again any time of the week...they are excellent.
The quote for the 19" wheels are R1400 per tyre. Admittedly they are Hankook's, which, may or may not be a good thing. Either way, R2500 is nutters - you can get good tyres for cheaper than that. I'm sure of it?
As for the mods - I've already eyed the Revo software as well as the K04 turbo upgrade kit which is sold by Sportech. Apparently it's a straight bolt-on situation with no modding required. I like that idea.
Something tells me that my car won't be on the 155kW mark for too long lol. But first things first. On the delivery day of my car I will have the windows tinted, bluetooth module installed, tracker installed (don't want to - but insurance says so) and I'll have a sweet set of 19" wheels on the car. After that I'll have to speak to my local VW service manager to find out how "friendly" he is towards people with Revo'd cars. If he tells me that I can get away with it - Revo will be on the car ASAP.

Unfortunately I couldn't get tires cheaper than that. My car came with Conti Sport Contact 2s. To replace a single tyre is R2500I wanted to get the Hankook Ventus Evo V12 (which are frikken awesome tyres, incidentally), but unfortunately there was no stock (which is a very common problem with these tyres - just a warning). Just something to be aware of with the Hankooks - they're directional tyres, which means you need to buy at least two of them. You can't add one to three asymmetric tyres, unfortunately.
Yeah, Revo software, KO4 turbo upgrade, new exhaust, new intake and new intercooler should see you pretty sorted. My modding to-do list looks fairly similar. DreamScience software, new exhaust, new intake, new intercooler and NOS (in place of a big turbo setup). Gonna take a while to get there though, that full list is gonna cost in the region of R45k...
Regarding the tracker, yeah not much of an option there. Our cars are serious theft risks, so the insurance companies reduce their risk in that area so they can keep the premium pretty low. Also, it allows them to generate a commission on the sale of the tracker![]()
