what is it? in short you have 1x life: when you die its a wipe, you have to recreate and start all over.
thinking back to when i used to play my peradeath characters on hellgate and how it got the heart pumping and when you level or get past that one or more challenge it really felt like zomg i did someting over well i just died, but who cares i will respawn and continue or reckless play style vs i know i might die so we better do this like there is no tomorrow. this is partly what perma death game play felt. you did what you did, but made sure that every thing is planned out and carried out correctly without carelessness or adept to survive at the given moment for there is no turning back there is only death in surrender.
now comes the qestion
would you rather play on a permadeath server (mmo yes or multiplayer wise) where you only have 1 life and if you die you have to restart at the very beginning ?
personally it for adds another level of gameplay and endurance to the game, i would have liked for example seen how far some would have gone if wow had some permadeath servers.
its definitly a seperation of elitisms amongs those who really can play the game and come out above. yes even the pvp in hellgate permadeath was permanent, you didn't just go challenging each over- youed better be sure of the stakes when you go LETS FIGHT.
i mean what more of an achievement can you have than to say; i have finished the and completed the challenged without dying, i have survived them all. afaik only one person succeeded in finishing hellgate on hardcore elite nightmare difficulty as you first have to finish the damned thing on hardcore elite and then start with the hardcore elite nightmare treck.
which btw the end bosses are up to lvl 62 or 65 if i remember correctly and you are at top lvl 50 rank 50 (and trust me being a highlevel for that class on permadeath, you would know that this guy can actually play that class). lol even surviving the hellgate approach was a feat on its own not to mention that you would have to kill 6 bosses in a row and then the final with random spawns...
...doing such group raid sure was fun, deadly and exciting.

It really depends on the game itself and the mechanics involved. It can either be thrilling or extremely frustrating. If there's a good balance, then I'm all for permadeath. Having overpowered classes etc. in an MMO with permadeath, however, won't be entertaining at all.
