To prove that the answer is 2, you must also prove that it's impossible to write 48÷2(9+3) as:
    48 / 2 * (9+3) = 48 / 2 * 12

    From the link:
    http://www.mathsisfun.com/operation-order-bodmas.html

Otherwise just go left to right. Example:

    Right:
    30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 6 × 3 = 18

    Wrong
    30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 30 ÷ 15 = 2

Indeed, I can't believe how many people discard the division and throw it in for kicks later.

    48÷2(9+3) = = 288

    48/(2(9+3)) = = 2

The sad part is how many times it's been said that division and multiplication don't take precedence over eachother, and in the case where there is both you work from left to right.

Oh well, at least I passed the maths I had at school and varsity

I tried ignoring this thread, but I ran out of intl, so I'm bored.

Implicit division or multiplication is ALWAYS done before implied division or multiplication. Division and multiplication go from right to left. The answer will be 288. Also, inputting it into my Sharp scientific calculator thus: 48/2(9+3) gives me 288. TBH, the only way I've divided since Gr. 9 is the fraction button. The division button gets a bit lonely sometimes so I divide with it to make it happy...
