You should buy the game, get some game time either from the Blizz store, most gaming stores sells the game time cards or you can pay per month with your credit card (I use this option since Im lazy :P)
Once the game is installed you can pick any server you like, I know there is a large South African group on Lightbringer, both factions had a south african guild. Alliance is Braaivleis if im not mistaken and the horde side is Prophecy. So it all depends on what you feel like playing.
Ingame just type in /who Prophecy or /who Braaivleis and whisper them and ask them if you can join the guild.

Not to sure what you mean by realm?? You can choose which faction you want to be - Horde or Alliance

Private servers suck man, they are dead
This is true, played private servers before I played the actual game, sort of fun but extremely buggy and lonely
The real servers however are polished, always filled with people and fun!
Did I mention the events totally make the game awesome?
It's a shame that game cards only last for fixed time periods and not how long people play on the actual game.
